Twenty years passed before Solomon finished building his two great houses, the house of the Lord and the king's house. That period marks the joint completion of the temple for God and the royal palace for himself. He had been favored with remarkable manifestations of divine power, had built God's temple, and had offered a notable prayer at its dedication. Yet afterward he forsook the very temple he had erected in order to worship idols.
