1 Kings 9:16

For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon’s wife.

Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and taken Gezer and burnt it with fire and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city and given it for a present to his daughter, Solomon's wife. Gezer lay near Joppa on the road between Egypt and Syria, and Solomon rebuilt and fortified it as one of the fortified cities placed at important trade routes. The rebuilding appeared to strengthen Solomon's kingdom on the Mediterranean coast, but that apparent benefit did not make the arrangement right.

The gift came through Solomon's forbidden marriage alliance with a heathen nation to an idolatrous princess. By that joining he disregarded God's provision to keep His people separate from idolatry. Instead of using Gezer as an opportunity to make the true God known to travelers from many nations, Solomon used it to serve his own power and commercial interests.
