Solomon Receives Gold from Ophir's Shipsby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 9:28

And they came to Ophir, and fetched from thence gold, four hundred and twenty talents, and brought it to king Solomon.

Solomon's seagoing ships sailed to Ophir and brought gold back to the king. The voyage was crewed by Hiram's experienced sailors from Tyre sailing together with Solomon's servants. It belonged to the commercial activity developed through Israel's access to the Red Sea at the port of Ezion-geber. The amount fetched from Ophir was 420 talents of gold.

This wealth increased the king's revenues and helped support his lavish court. The trade was used for political strengthening and personal gain and self-aggrandizement. The commercial opportunity was misused for personal gain while the chance to teach travelers from many nations about the true God was neglected. The gold of Ophir, together with silver from Tarshish, was procured at a terrible cost, by sacrificing integrity and betraying sacred trust.
