1 Peter 1:22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
Obeying the truth through the Spirit purifies the soul unto sincere, unfeigned, fervent love of the brethren from a pure heart. This purification comes through faith working by love as the Spirit makes the living Word effective, giving new birth not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible to transform character and save. It is inward and practical, not mere hearing or profession, requiring true conversion, cutting away inherited and cultivated evil, selfishness and guile, and obeying God's law as it is in Jesus. The love produced is active and impartial, removing selfishness, discord and coldness, showing kindness, courtesy, forgiveness and self-sacrificing service across all divisions of race and station. So lived, this purifying obedience sanctifies in full conformity to God's will and prepares a spotless people to stand in the day of the Lord, receive the seal of God and meet Christ at His appearing.
Meaning of Verse Words
Obeying the truth through the Spirit purifies the soul unto unfeigned, sincere, fervent love of the brethren with a pure heart. In view of Christ's great sacrifice this obedience is required, and God's Word is the channel through which He works by His Spirit, so that obedience bears the fruit of love born from heaven, expressed in high motives and unselfish actions. The Word of God received and lived out produces faith that works through love and purifies the soul, cutting away inherited evil tendencies and cultivated wrong traits of character. This obedience binds to God and stands against angry speech, dissension, and strife.
The Holy Spirit operates only through the channel of the truth to convince of sin and righteousness and judgment, to open the heart to receive the Word, and to transform and save the soul as the gift of God. No one can create faith; the Spirit working on and enlightening the human mind creates faith in God, presses truth on the heart, and alone makes truth a power that makes the soul holy. Faith is the gift of God that saves and gives light to those who search for truth as for hidden treasure, and the gospel transforms mind and heart and makes the cross of Christ triumphant, with humanity made the working means through which that changing power acts. This love produced is not passing sentiment but a heaven-born, unselfish principle, and merely hearing and assenting to truth without submitting to its power does not purify the heart. The Spirit's purification must overcome inherited and cultivated partialities and natural selfish tendencies, or sincere love will not be practiced, and truth received under the Spirit's guidance stands apart from false doctrines that must be detected and rejected.
Purification comes by being born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the living and abiding Word of God preached in the gospel, so that faith and hope are founded not in feeling but in God and His enduring Word. The Spirit impresses divine truths on the heart, awakens new understanding, and stirs dormant powers to work with God. The Word is the truth and the divinely appointed instrument of salvation that calls each person individually to look to Christ in faith for pardon and acceptance, and purifying the soul by obeying every word that proceeds from the mouth of God through the Spirit proves the Word has been savingly received into the heart and abides there. That purifying work is given through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon every soul that receives the truth, transforming the character and sanctifying the believer, making him pure and holy and a fit vessel for the Master's use. It draws near to God and partakes of the divine nature, lifting the mind above earth-born amusements to behold the character of Jesus and strive to be like Him by meditating on the rich truths of the Word with girded mind and desires turned away from games and pleasure, and those who follow on to know the Lord and advance constantly searching the Scriptures will have the soul revived by the Holy Spirit to comprehend the truth not as in human wisdom but as it is in Jesus. All who take hold of the work must faithfully preserve and practice the highest, holiest principles of the Word, be born again by the power of the Word through obedience to the truth, and know for themselves by experience what righteousness means, even being sent out two together so they can help one another be honored sons of God in this love.
The soul thus purified is of infinite worth, to be estimated only by the cross of Calvary and the price paid to redeem it, the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, not by corruptible things such as silver and gold and precious stones. Because of that worth the soul must be committed every day in faith and trust to Christ alone for keeping, since man cannot appreciate or care for his own soul and if not committed to God it falls into Satan's keeping. The soul is precious because Christ redeemed it at great cost, and it must be entrusted to God rather than angels or any other power.
Unfeigned love of the brethren is love without dissimulation, sincere, impartial, sanctified, and free from hypocrisy. It is more than impulse or emotion or feeling; it is an active, living, working principle guided by the will, a lasting divine principle sustained by the Holy Spirit and flowing from God's love. When the love of Christ is brought into the soul by faith, there is an entire change in views and feelings toward God and toward brethren, with doubts and fears gone and self-denial and self-sacrifice wrought peacefully and pleasantly, as a stern resolve of a mind subdued and softened that lays hold of divine strength, leading the soul to surrender in obedience and to keep God's commandments. It produces sincere love for the saints as the purchase of Christ's blood, unity in Christian fellowship as members of one body and branches of one vine, and the conviction that it is impossible to love Christ without loving those who believe in Him. It comes only by cherishing faith that works by love, which purifies the soul from all emulation and all strife.
The verse sets forth the high standard Christians may reach if they hear and obey, and it must be read, studied with all powers of intelligence, practiced with watchfulness and prayer, and expressed in words and actions. Its language warns against lifting up the soul unto vanity and calls to daily obedience to all the commandments of God by which spiritual life is maintained, and fathers and mothers are to study it and let their words and actions express its meaning. Solemn belief in 1 Peter 1:1-25 in letter and in spirit with full purpose to carry it out brings a decided change in the words spoken to others and in the spirit of speech, especially for men and women seeking church office, and the chapter is to be read with the book of James and First and Second Peter, with individual prayer to Jesus Christ for the converting influence of the Holy Spirit. The instruction in 1 Peter 1 and 2 exhorting believers to a godly life and giving the manner of labor is to be presented to the people as part of the work of salvation and the last warning message preparing the world for the closing work of the third angel's message. God's chosen people are to remain forever separate from the world, living in the world but not of the world and kept free from its contaminating influences, with right principles requiring physicians and their brethren to stand in the relation the Lord designed, medical missionary work bound up with the gospel ministry, all workers standing on the platform of truth, molded and fashioned after the similitude of Christ, respecting the pure living principles of the gospel, and united with ministers in soul-saving work.
How Purification Is Received
Purification comes through faith that works by love as the Spirit makes truth effective in the heart. That faith is a living power that disciplines and elevates the soul, delivers it from defilement, connects it to Christ so His virtue meets its need, and is nurtured by grace until the fruit and efficiency of the Spirit appear in life and work. It is shown in daily life by sincere, active, practical care for others, including willing cheerful service, helping the poor, comforting widows and orphans, using means and influence for good, and regarding believers of every race as members of the same spiritual family without distinction. Believing in Christ and receiving His transforming grace is a real work that makes His virtues visible in mind and character.
Souls are purified by receiving, believing and obeying Christ's words and God's counsels in good and honest hearts, taking heed to them and practicing them daily, which bears fruit to God's glory and fits for service and trial. People purify themselves through this obedience, bringing mind, soul, body, thoughts and will into subjection to Christ and harmony with God, learning to bear His cross and endure shame for His sake as they seek to draw others to Him. This purification removes earthly dross and cleanses inherited and cultivated partialities and natural tendencies, and the purified are to love one another fervently with a pure heart, putting away differences, envy, evil speaking and evil thoughts.
Mere hearing, intellectual assent, sound doctrine, profession, theory or outward form without submitting to its power and bringing truth into the life does not purify or save. A living experience of truth is more than reading Scripture or claiming to believe it, for true faith is shown in obedience and in doing what pleases God. Truth received in the heart and practiced in the life produces faith that works through love, cuts away inherited evil tendencies and cultivated wrong traits, and overcomes partialities and natural selfishness, without which sincere love will not be practiced.
People purify themselves by this obedience and God helps all who make the effort. Purification is both man's privilege and part as a laborer together with God in saving his own soul, by receiving Christ as personal Saviour and continuing to believe in Him at all times and abiding in Him, and it is also God's gift received as the heart opens to His Word. That faith constantly represents Christ's character because it works by love and cleanses from all defilement, and Christ as its Author demands its constant exercise, by which a constant supply of grace is received. It cannot be originated by human power, for faith is the gift of God depending on His power to hold and keep from falling, and it is made possible because Christ identified His interest with suffering humanity to give weak, sin-prone man moral power to do God's works, uplifting from depravity unto likeness to Christ and sonship with God.
Purification is through the Spirit, needing His outpouring and transforming energy on every soul that receives truth. In no other way are souls cleansed than by receiving and obeying truth through the Spirit in obedience to Christ's word, which sanctifies, transforms character, makes pure and holy and fit vessels for the Master's use, and brings to unfeigned and fervent love with a pure heart. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit pledge presence, grace and strength to those who seek this, enabling them to lead others to accept Christ by faith, while hearts sanctified by obedience become fit to represent His righteousness. Without dependence on Him works do not harmonize with truth and methods are full of the human element, while with it brotherhood is manifested and doctrine brought into contact with souls produces elevating practices that resist moral corruption.
Obedience without trust and faith abiding in Christ does not fully represent sanctification through the truth, for faith in Christ brings peace and joy. Safety lies not in merely professing truth but in living it out daily, hourly, momentarily, by genuine faith working by love, being imbued with the Spirit, walking humbly with God and watching unto prayer lest selfishness, undiscovered sin or cherished hereditary or acquired habit gain mastery and turn the feet from copying Christ's pattern. Purifying faith is justifying faith held in head and heart and carried into life like a thread of gold through words and actions, a practical working faith exercised in everything, bringing every current of the soul by education, discipline and training into helpful active service; religion has no value unless active, self-denying and earnest, alive and giving assurance by perfect obedience, and knowledge that doctrine is of God comes by doing His will. Believers are not saved by works nor saved in evil works, but have a faith that works out salvation and character after the divine similitude, bound to Christ by love in living connection with God and manifesting His love every hour in unity, in home, church and work, with no fretfulness, discourtesy, roughness, sharp speech, quarreling, tale-bearing or wounding of reputations, cleansed as vessels unto honor fit for the Master's use.
Truth is a single unit amid a multitude of errors, and cherishing that truth in the heart displays its sanctifying power in the life, for genuine faith works by love and purifies the soul. That love for Christ gives rise to faith and interest in others, quenches selfish ambition and hatred, and refreshes and strengthens spiritual life in unselfish loyalty.
Purification is an individual duty accomplished daily in the heart by study of the Word, simplicity of true faith, advancement in spiritual understanding, walking carefully close to Christ, and receiving His spirit and grace in a faith that works by love, with divine agencies cooperating through affliction and trial to overcome sin and produce His love, peace and kindness. It depends not so much on knowledge gained by study as on purity of purpose and earnestness of faith, reading with meditation and prayer, earnest desire to be helped and blessed, and applying truth to daily experience under divine guidance. It means surrendering to God's will and letting principles of the Word guide life, keeping the will on God's side and holding position triumphantly in God even when temptation taxes willpower and exercising faith seems contrary to sense and emotion. It is kept and increased only by growing in love for truth and practicing faith working by love, for truth put to no practical use grows dim while hearts softened by the Spirit receive it in contrition and long to be purified and ennobled by it.
What Purification Requires
Purifying obedience cuts away earthly dross and cleanses inherited partialities, cultivated wrong traits strengthened by habit, natural selfishness and other natural tendencies to wrong, requiring careful examination and determined uprooting of hidden depravity and cherished faults that weaken spirituality and lead to condemning others. This purification ennobles and consecrates the fallen nature and cannot be joined with worldly principles, deception or pretense. Those worked by the Holy Spirit melt into tenderness, discern and do the great work for souls by manifesting Christ's pitying tenderness, become partakers of the divine nature escaping corruption through lust, and grow in true grace as co-laborers with Christ until surface work that leaves character dwarfed and sickly is overcome. Beholding Jesus, contemplating His perfections and talking of Him gives meekness and lowliness, exposes cold, rough, harsh and selfish ways, and requires putting away self-importance, envy, evil-surmising and jealousy, pleading for the Spirit to abide, surrendering will and plans wholly to God, and welcoming the ax and hammer in God's workshop to cut away self-esteem and carnal propensities until Christ's image is reflected. No one is left to struggle alone who in faith and much prayer takes self in hand, brings self into subjection, represses evil inclination, refuses false ways and excuses, and cuts away evil of whatever character, for Christ helps in every true purpose in the battle with the enemy.
Purification is inward truth received in the heart and practiced in the life, not outward show, for truth is an active, refining, elevating principle that molds character after Christ, refines judgment and the whole life, makes partakers of the divine nature, and brings constant upward movement in grace. It must reach mind and heart and shape daily life in more acceptable manners, highest usefulness of voice, spiritual soundness, righteousness and godliness, and without that inward work no one can be a safe and wise guide. Claiming to know the truth is not enough; it must deeply convert and transform character through self-renunciation and pure noble motives, lived in Christ's footsteps and the Bible standard instead of patterning after the world, display and the opinions of men.
It requires true conversion and thorough change of mind, unconditional surrender, abiding in Christ, refusing compromise with sin and selfishness, humbling self before God, confessing and repenting of every sin, and yielding to the creating power of the Holy Spirit beginning with one's own heart. The soul is purified by obeying the truth through cleansing from all filthiness of flesh and spirit and perfecting holiness in the fear of God, not by professing godliness while building on sand, rushing recklessly insensible of danger and Judgment, or being controlled by impulse and gross passion to fill out a dark life-record with fearful retribution ahead. Even those who have corrupted their ways, partaken of abounding iniquity and blackened their souls with sin can still turn, take hold of His strength, and find in Jesus the peace, power and grace that make them more than conquerors. As the spotless character of Christ is seen more clearly the purified desire more earnestly to become like Him, take a humble view of self, and rely on Christ alone as righteousness, sanctification and redemption because they cannot answer Satan's charges or secure their own defense. This work includes cultivating purity of thought and life with grace to restrain passions and curb appetites, and earnest prayer and watchfulness bringing the Spirit's aid to complete it and make the person like Christ, with sins confessed and repented in humility now, for sins left unconfessed will be revealed in full seriousness at the day of God's wrath.
It binds to God against angry speech, dissension, strife, envy, evil speaking and surmising, false accusing, faultfinding, judging others, harsh criticism and wounding words, instead judging self, weeding one's own garden, and showing meek, pure, peaceable wisdom. Obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love requires fervent love from a pure heart, putting away differences, envy, evil thoughts, bitter envying, vainglory and controversy, refusing to think evil of brethren, putting the least and most favorable meaning on what they do and say, and ceasing to weaken one another and lay stumbling blocks in one another's pathway. It means laying aside wounding words and living soberly in hope of grace at the revelation of Jesus Christ, passing the time of sojourning in fear of the impartial Father, sitting with Christ in heavenly places so that words and decisions bring peace rather than confusion and every evil work. Those purified are to see that their own hearts are right with God and make sure to be among the elect through sanctification of the Spirit unto obedience.
It means obeying God's unabolished, unchangeable commands and law as it is in Jesus, with practical purity as defined in the Sermon on the Mount, renouncing hidden dishonesty, craftiness and guile, sensing sin's hateful character and expelling it, in contrast to outward exactness joined with inward wickedness. Truth received into the heart works by love, conforms habits and customs to Christ, moves the learner to uplift the Saviour, and makes the receiver loyal to God with mind, heart and will yielded to Him in obedience to His holy, just and good law. Christ suffered in humanity to elevate, refine and purify humanity through obedience to God's law, and this obedience brings the consolation of the truth with relief and happiness, while want, misery, oppression and distress abound because men forsake God, disregard His law and misappropriate His means. Mere profession of keeping the commandments and much talk about obeying the law is not this purification, for those without working, purifying faith fail to work righteousness, walk against God's law and refuse the warnings sent to turn them to righteousness, and false claims of sanctification that excuse sin work away from the truth. Faith working through love also purifies from Satan's suggestions, with God's law written in the heart accompanying conversion and a life shaped by the Saviour within.
It produces integrity at any cost in handling what belongs to God and others, being truthful in thought, word and deed with strict honesty, guarding the cause from robbery and embezzlement, and working with an eye single to God's glory. Accepting the truth sanctifies life and character and shows a decided change in spirit, character and conduct, putting away vanity, selfish propensities, yielding to temptation and reckless handling of the Lord's goods. Claiming conversion while acting dishonestly with what belongs to God or misusing it contradicts the truth, for the change is manifested in love for others and in honest, faithful conduct. Those who obey cannot keep any sinful habit or indulge any crooked or guileful way but renounce all hidden dishonesty, craftiness and satanic wiles, discern the deceiver's snares, sense sin in its true hateful character and expel it from the soul. This purifying work is required especially of shepherds of the flock as laborers together with God, who must first take heed to themselves, be doers of the Word, present it fairly without deceit, keep Christ's cross and self-denial prominent, and feed upon Christ by thinking of Him and obeying His words so they grow unto the full stature of men and women in Christ.
A heart purified by obedience has no selfish preferences, corrupt motives, partiality, hypocrisy or lovesick sentimentalism, and guards against feelings and words that drive away God's Spirit and corrupt others. Such sentimentalism can harm an institution and those around, so purification satisfies the thirsty soul by refreshing with the Word, feeding upon Christ's words and drinking deep of the water of life instead of turbid streams, taking away sentimental craving for human devotion and giving far greater spirituality. Purification is kept only by unceasingly watching the natural affections and tendencies of the heart, by watching and praying and making God the trust, for placing affections on human beings and putting special friends where God should be estranges the soul from God, leaves experience incomplete and imperils happiness, since true abiding happiness never comes from any human being and requires every earthly support removed with entire affections centered on God. Keeping this purifying truth means cherishing it as working by love and shunning all spiritualistic ideas of God as leprosy, holding to what God has revealed rather than to mysteries He has not revealed.
It cleanses thoughts from moral defilement and consecrates body, mind and soul to God for working with Him with the mind of Christ, requiring heart-searching, overcoming obstinacy and self-love, and constant earnest prayer. Obedience through the Holy Spirit sanctifies and shapes human powers rather than serving as a power people control, subdues unholy impulses and unlawful appetites and passions, and relies on the blood of the Lamb and the testimony in faithfully doing one's duties. When confronting wrongs, firmness and decision in this purification must not become arbitrary, overbearing or crushing.
It requires depending on Christ's righteousness rather than one's own, looking to Him and striving to obtain His robe, for those refusing to put away evil lack it and face judgment. Christians are therefore called to strive for this purification and to live in keeping with their profession, with the truth working through love in a sincere, kind spirit toward others. Purifying the soul comes through faith in the atoning sacrifice laying hold upon Christ as the sin-pardoning Saviour, a faith that works by love, transforms character, brings repentance and purifies from carnal thoughts, desires and moral defilement, while mere intellectual assent that Christianity is the only hope or that Jesus is Redeemer does not purify or save any more than the belief of devils. The words of Christ abiding in believers produce this fruit, and the love and service that follow are evidence that His words are at work within.
Nature of Fervent Love
Fervent brotherly love is Bible sanctification brought into practical life, removing selfishness, discord, variance, alienation, strife, covetousness, harshness, unkindness and coldness, and bringing unity where there is no need for alienation when self is sanctified. It is the most convincing evidence that Bible truth is believed and practiced, enabling God's servants scattered through all countries and cities to show a world broken by discord, strife, variance and hatred that there is a people who believe in Christ and live out His Word, bearing the credentials that God sent His Son that the world through Him might be saved and receive life through faith. Such love is expressed in tender words and actions while grace subdues pride and removes contention and coldness, growing from a heart controlled by truth and working through love to join believers in unity rather than remaining mere theory or harsh legal religion. That purification means putting away hardheartedness, humbling proud hearts in true repentance, acting justly and benevolently, inviting all to come to Christ and believe, ceasing dissension and strife, becoming one as Christ was one with the Father, and proving love for Christ by doing His Word at a higher, holier standard.
The commanded love must be genuine, sincere, deep and fervent from a pure heart with pure motive, cultivated and cherished as a precious plant whose influence is divine. It is expressed by doing for others what one would wish them to do for oneself in like circumstances, following Christ's example of going about doing good and living to bless others, with love beautifying and ennobling all His actions. Pure love is simple in its operations and distinct from every other principle of action, for love of influence, desire for esteem, self-respect, self-interest, and selfish generosity may produce a well-ordered life, blameless conversation and outward conduct, generous actions, acknowledgment of present truth, and outward humility and affection, yet with deceptive and impure motives destitute of the savor of life and the fruits of true holiness because destitute of pure love. Strong motives constrain minds to this love, for doing to others as one would be done by brings blessed results as fruit, and the measure meted is always measured again.
It is brotherly and sisterly love expressed in kindness, courtesy, tenderness, pity, and forgiving one another as Christ forgave, following His example in all things with life hid with Him in God. Such love belongs to those risen with Christ to walk in newness of life, the elect who are holy and beloved, separate from the world and clothed in righteousness, keeping the baptismal vow and partaking of the divine nature through living the life of Christ, and being holy in all manner of conduct as God is holy. It means loving Jesus and cherishing love for all His believing ones, showing sweet humble meekness, trust and faith, resting in God's Word and receiving and doing it as obedient children, giving thanksgiving instead of murmuring, presenting truth in simplicity as children tell simple experiences rather than making astonishing disclosures or trying to measure the infinite, and working to bless and save fellow men instead of living to please self. That purifying love is shown in helping, strengthening and building up one another in the most holy faith, lifting up Jesus higher and still higher, thinking no evil and speaking no evil of another, faithfully going in Christ's spirit with meekness and love to plainly tell one thought to be in error of his error and danger while watching oneself lest temptation come, and drawing near to fellow believers to encourage them to carry responsibilities faithfully in the fear of God.
It must cross racial, social and status divisions, because all who belong to Christ are brothers and sisters and equally precious members of God's family. This love requires respect and tender kindness toward every believer including colored believers, treating believers of different races as equally precious, regarding one another as members of the same spiritual family and showing compassion, mercy, kindness, humility, meekness and patience without distinction, since Christian brotherhood is not determined by outward distinctions or skin color. To despise or speak harshly to them is to despise those purchased by Christ's blood, and such conduct shows need for transforming grace.
When afflicted by false accusation and by the course of those who ought to help and support the tried and tempted, including failure of helpers and an unconsecrated shepherd who fails to minister and build up the flock, purifying obedience brings love that cherishes no spirit of retaliation whatever course others pursue, doing nothing retaliatory in thought or action. It bears no other soul's sin, thanks God for innocence, commits the whole case to Jesus who died and gave His precious life and knows it all, and holds faith in Him and holds His hand stretched out in pitying tenderness to every suffering child, believing and trusting in Him in every trying hour under every adverse circumstance because He never fails and is sufficient for the present hour of trial. It lets love be without dissimulation, abhorring evil and cleaving to good, being kindly affectioned with brotherly love and in honor preferring one another, which is salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth held fast.
Purified souls are proved by unfeigned fervent love that refuses to become tempters, recognizes every individual's trials and battle with the powers of darkness, and lifts the weights on tempted souls. When self is put aside and Christ kept in view, love for one another works to purify the soul and helps bring unity. That purification comes by faith that works by love and changes words and actions to prayer in spirit and understanding, comfortable words, praise and song instead of complaint, faultfinding, fretting and scolding, garrisoning the soul against Satan and the confederacy of evil, while one whose life lacks this faith needs conversion before becoming a blessing to others.
Love for one another is the fruit and measure of sanctification through the truth, binding believers to Christ and to each other in practical love that shapes conduct and brings the whole person into harmony with divine life. It is the evidence that professed faith is genuine, for without unselfish love faith is empty and misrepresents Christ. Purification comes by faith which works by love joined with determined obedience to every word proceeding from God's mouth, giving power of intellect to discern righteousness from unrighteousness and to reveal God to the world, and revealed at every advance step as all unite in carrying out God's requirements with Christianity as the revealing of tenderest affection for one another in Christian duties and privileges.
Obedience purifies from selfishness unto sincere love shown in self-sacrificing service, displaying holy living faith in Jesus working through love. The love of fellow believers and unselfish service to those in need arise when God's love and grace are present in the heart, with the Spirit shaping the life to Christ's example, making those with this faith happy and entirely safe. The disciples needed to show love and gratitude for Jesus in visible acts of care and honor, as Mary's loving service showed the lesson they had missed. When this purifying love is lived as Bible religion, those who come into line to understand God's will are endued with the Spirit and lifted onto a higher platform, no longer fixing themselves in a way of their own choosing irrespective of counsels of brethren, and more new converts come as God's people awake to warn unwarned inhabitants of cities and out-of-the-way places and see God's salvation.
This genuine faith and love is lacking in the church, leaving Christian experience imperfect because believers do not love as Christ loved them. Admiration for self and measuring others by self prevents understanding the Scriptures and prevents any comprehension of the faith that works by love and purifies the soul.
Sanctification and Holy Character
Obedience to the truth purifies the soul and is part of being made holy in conformity to God's will in thought, word, and deed. Sanctification means perfect love, perfect obedience, and full conformity to God's will, and believers are to keep advancing toward that ideal by cutting away the entanglements of self and sin. This progress is within everyone's reach, for God supplies power and grace and spiritual strength to those who yield themselves to be sanctified through willing obedience, leading to sincere love for fellow believers. That sanctification brings the whole person — body, mind, and soul — into harmony with God and into glorious freedom, and those who keep His commandments receive His special favor.
By the sacrifice of Christ every provision has been made for believers to receive all things that pertain to life and godliness, and this is the source of strength for sanctification of soul, body, and spirit. The perfection of Christ's character makes it possible to gain perfection, so God's people can and must reach the standard of Christian perfection, the highest standard of glory and virtue, becoming a church without spot or wrinkle. To do this they must learn of Christ His meekness and lowliness and know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, which is life eternal. Dependence on Christ and following His example, with faith that works through love, produce a pure, undefiled character that reflects His patience, meekness, humility, and love, bears the fruit of a well-ordered life and godly conduct, loves fellow believers sincerely and fervently, subdues self, bears with one another, and works together in harmony to the Father's glory.
Purifying the soul by willing obedience to the truth produces unfeigned love of the brethren and the command to love one another with a pure heart fervently, done by walking in faith and hope and charity and by maintaining firm, unyielding, ever-ennobling Bible principle instead of warring to obtain mastery. Growth in grace through such obedience is an imperceptible process, but its results testify to the power of God in increased spiritual vigor, sincerity, earnestness, and power. Faith that works by love models character after the divine likeness and reforms it, and the grace of God in this purifying work beautifies, ennobles, and sanctifies the character, giving life, bringing submission to God's will, and showing the Spirit's fruits and power in life and works, with daily continual union with Christ bringing forgiveness and sanctification unto eternal life.
Obedience to the truth through the Spirit both elevates and purifies the soul, and those so purified are to love others sincerely and fervently. This purification gives clear spiritual discernment to recognize error, discern righteousness from unrighteousness, avoid being led astray, and remain united with Christ, requiring putting away evil and practicing the truth. It depends not so much on knowledge gained by study as on purity of purpose and earnestness of faith, reading the Word with meditation and prayer and earnest desire to be helped and blessed, applying truth to daily experience, walking with fear and trembling in humility and seeking divine guidance, while the Holy Spirit opens rich treasures of truth to the humble and contrite and angels instruct them. He who thus purifies his soul sees and appreciates the love and mercy with which God has strewn the pathway of His children, realizes that paths of human devising lead to eternal ruin, and stands in hopefulness before God so that God is honored by and through the life.
Obeying the truth purifies the soul and prepares a person for heaven, where only unsullied purity can dwell. This preparation sanctifies life and readies people for the final review of character, for the mansions Christ has gone to prepare, for future immortal life, and for entry through the gates into the city of God, with truth working in the heart with the help of heavenly angels making the heart tender and increasing the desire to know how to be saved. Purification of heart and mind is necessary to remove from character anything that would exclude one from God's city, and obeying the truth as it is in Jesus prepares people to do good, with love for God shown in works that let light shine through deeds of truth and goodness.
Purity and love are qualities of the Christian, reflecting the value God places on a humble, contrite heart rather than outward appearance, wealth, or social standing. Faith working through love purifies the soul, bears witness to having been with Christ, and this inward change gives a different character to a person's work. Sanctification through obeying the truth means exchanging error for truth and accepting new and clearer light as it constantly unfolds upon the pathway of God's people, rather than remaining satisfied, willfully closing eyes and ears and barring the heart with prejudice lest a better way be seen, and refusing to understand, be converted, and be healed. Without this Bible sanctification the soul becomes a desecrated shrine, the haunt of hollow formalism, of selfishness and hypocrisy, pride and passion. Genuine conversion joins believers in faith and love, and a growing Christian life is marked by increasing faith and strong hope.
Preparation for Christ Coming
Those living at the close of earth's history have particular urgent need to practice the injunction to love one another fervently with a pure heart, because obeying the truth through the Spirit purifies the soul unto unfeigned love of the brethren. This work must be done now while it is called today, while the Spirit invites and mercy sounds, for Christ at His appearing will not make ready those who have not become sanctified, since then there will be no atoning blood to wash away stains of sin. The urgency is solemn because signs testify the end is nearer than when first believed, missionary work at home and abroad is far behind, great trouble will soon arise among nations until Jesus comes, the world grows more lawless, and churches unite to restrict religious liberty. Such purification requires humbling the heart before God, confessing sins, earnestly seeking God as strength, claiming His promises by believing Jesus pardons transgression, training to overcome murmuring and complaining, and letting works in proclaiming truth correspond to profession.
This purification forms a heavenly character and prepares to receive the seal of God in the forehead, in contrast to uniting with the world and receiving the worldly mold for the mark of the beast. It is the great work of preparation now, done by those distrustful of self and humbling themselves before God. When the decree goes forth and the seal is impressed, that character will remain pure and spotless for eternity.
Purifying the soul in obeying the whole truth and submitting to correction by the prophets is the needful preparation to stand in the day of the Lord and to live in the sight of a holy God without a High Priest through the time of trouble. Those so hewed reflect the image of Jesus fully, gain victory over every besetment, over pride, selfishness, love of the world, and over every wrong word and action, draw nearer to the Lord, receive the seal of the living God, and receive the refreshing and latter rain that fit them to live in His sight, since only holy beings can dwell in His presence. This purification comes by a faith that works by love, not by works yet not in evil works, working out salvation and character after the divine similitude in living connection with God and manifesting His love every hour in unity of action, brother with brother. It works in home life where Christ as the peace principle removes fretfulness, discourtesy, roughness and sharp speech, as members of the Royal Family and children of the Heavenly King, and that religion extends to church, work and everywhere. Those who refuse to be hewed, fail to purify their souls, cherish not great light received, and believe their condition far better than it is neglect that preparation, have no shelter in trouble, cannot receive the refreshing, will meet great loss and be left unprotected when Satan comes in great wrath with all deceivableness of unrighteousness, and will come up to the plagues only to see they needed hewing for the building when there is no time and no Mediator pleads after the unjust, filthy, righteous and holy are declared to remain as they are.
The truth for this time that purifies is the third angel's message, which separates people from the world and prepares them for translation. In view of Christ's great sacrifice believers are to purify their souls by obeying the truth through the Spirit unto sincere love, loving one another fervently with a pure heart, with the Holy Spirit softening natural temperaments, bringing powers into subjection to Christ, and convicting and converting those who accept the truth for these last days. Those who seek this obedience are God's chosen people, His modern Israel, whose receiving and believing purifies life from selfishness and rivalry and calls them to draw near to Him and love as brothers with tender hearts and kind words. This obedience brings mind, soul, body, thoughts and will into subjection to Christ and harmony with God, joined to active faith and love that seeks to draw others to Christ and thereby fits for service and trial, learning to bear His cross and endure shame.
Obeying the truth as it is in Jesus purifies the soul and belongs to following Christ and preparing for the home He has made ready and for His appearing, using time to overcome defects of character and help others see holiness so as not to be found without the wedding garment. This obedience is part of preparation to stand in the day of judgment, for faith without works is dead and a pure heart and clean hands are necessary. Professed Sabbathkeepers with great light and precious opportunities must have an awakening that convicts and converts them to put away grave cherished sins, earthly-mindedness and corrupt thoughts and practices, or they will die in sins with punishment heavier than Sodom and Gomorrah.
In testing time professed believers must be wholly converted and sanctified by obedience to the truth rather than remain aligned with the spirit of the world. God leads His professed people step by step to different testing points to manifest what is in the heart, testing closer at every advance, requiring overcoming selfishness, pride, evil passions and sacrificing every cherished idol that shuts out Jesus. Only those enduring every point and standing every test are purified, heeding the counsel of the True Witness and fitted for translation by the latter rain, while those refusing remain joined to idols with evil traits unsubdued to the control of evil angels and are spued out, and careless professors like the foolish virgins who know theory without vital connection with God and cherish hidden sins must seek God to be cleansed and made holy. Purifying by obeying the truth means cherishing great light received and letting sentiments of truth refine, purify and ennoble mind, heart, will and purposes until straightforward and unselfish, with mind and will clean and sanctified, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, using every capability to serve the Lord, while those not cherishing light keep leaven of disaffection at work, leaven others with evil and imperil souls under their influence.
Purifying the soul comes through faith that works by love, secured by watching, praying and seeking, meaning more than hearing and assenting, but bringing truth into daily life by doing the Word and keeping God's commandments, including obedience to physical law as necessary for growth in grace. Indifference, unfaithfulness, carelessness and mere pretense of waiting leave the vessel with no oil for the lamp, and those favored with every opportunity for light and knowledge who still do not obey receive no encouragement. This purification involves reformation and transformation essential to the soul's health, preparing truth to shine clearly before unbelievers and supporting work for those outside the faith. All need this truth that works by love and purifies, and insisting on doing as one pleases stands against it, though the Lord will allow a man his own way to bitter experience.
This purification is received by beholding Jesus, contemplating His perfections, talking of Him, and having the heart aglow with God's love, which gives Christ's meekness and lowliness. Beholding the Pattern exposes cold, rough, harsh, uncourteous ways and the offensive character of sin, selfishness and hardness of heart, and leads to practicing truth and teaching it as it is in Jesus. It requires putting away all self, self-importance, self-love, self-esteem, envy, evil-surmising and jealousy, pleading for the Holy Spirit to come and abide, tasting that the Lord is good, hungering for more of the Spirit, surrendering will, way, plans and ideas to God, keeping His way, and guarding words and deportment. As rough stones from the world's quarry, purified souls welcome ax and hammer in God's workshop to cut away self-esteem and smooth roughness and carnal propensities until proportioned for the heavenly building, then receive polishing, refining, subduing and burnishing after Christ's model until His image is reflected in them.
Living Out Purifying Faith
Purifying obedience to truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned, fervent love with a pure heart is the standard of perfect service in God's work, too often left undone while many labor in an entirely different manner. All who take hold of the work, canvassers and office workers, must faithfully preserve and practice the highest, holiest principles of the Word, be born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the living Word, and know by experience what righteousness means. This requires taking self in hand and firmly, constantly correcting personal errors rather than assuming one's way is perfect or that no higher standard must be reached, uprooting natural depravity, selfishness, rivalry, covetousness, vanity, hastiness of temper, and thinking and speaking evil of others. When workers do not do this purifying work in themselves first, their work for God is made of little effect. For physicians especially it means earnestly seeking the Lord and reformation of life, setting the Lord ever before them and carrying the lamp of life everywhere under the purest, most Christlike influences, lest scientific knowledge be used to believe the end justifies the means, to do strange shaming things, to sacrifice principle for desire, and to bring worldly methods into God's work, which sells the truth and brings heaven's displeasure and closes the gates of the holy city unless changed, since no act can sanctify an unrighteous act. Two workers should be sent out together so they can help one another be honored sons of God in this love, and those who follow on to know the Lord will find His goings forth prepared as the morning, with the Holy Spirit reviving the soul to comprehend truth as it is in Jesus as they advance constantly searching the Scriptures.
Shepherds of the flock as laborers together with God must first take heed to themselves, be doers of the Word, present it fairly without deceit, keep Christ's cross and self-denial prominent, and feed upon Christ by thinking of Him and obeying His words so they grow unto the full stature of men and women in Christ. Feeding and strengthening the flock with the truths of the Word purifies and keeps it, while ignorance of this purifying truth makes shepherds self-indulgent and turns their powers to their own interests, and refusing the Word and refusing to obey God's commandments leaves churches backslidden and the flock destroyed for lack of feeding. Truth must be brought with divine power into the human heart, so that those who obey cannot keep any sinful habit or indulge any crooked or guileful way but renounce all hidden things of dishonesty, all craftiness and wiles, sense sin in its true hateful character, and expel it from the soul. Coming to know truth as it is in Jesus gives faith that works by love and purifies the soul, bringing enlarged views of God and a right estimate of the character to be formed, and this is the fruit of the gospel preached in clear lines in foreign fields where truth is presented consistently in a way appealing to sound judgment unto sanctification through obedience. That faith changes character so those in Christ treat the erring with patience and kindness, teach and reform, comfort and protect, and make peace rather than stir strife, and it must endure tests of love and loyalty rather than refusing God's commandments for fear of ridicule or for earthly advantage.
That lived-out purifying love makes believers laborers together with God under the Lord Jesus' direction, awakening much latent dormant energy, training capabilities in faith as the mind unfolds under the Holy Spirit's guidance, and calling for training of Christian workers. Every church obeying in this way can become a power in convincing the world of Bible truth, for the church is made up of all united by faith to Christ as children of God and members of one family, not ministers only, and by them the gospel work is to be accomplished. When this consecrated, Christlike practical living brings harmony, unity of value in God's sight, sweet harmony among superiors, inferiors and equals, growing together as a holy temple, and hand-to-hand and heart-to-heart interest in building the old waste places, with no one fixing himself in his own chosen way irrespective of brethren's counsels, those lifted onto a higher platform and endued with the Spirit see more new converts come as God's people awake to warn unwarned inhabitants of cities and out-of-the-way places. Such purified, loving faith marks consecrated workers whose lives demonstrate truth's power to influence hearts, showing a broken world scattered through all countries that there is a people who believe in Christ.
In the home where Christ rules and the will of God governs, purifying faith that works by love stands at the helm, keeping self from asserting itself, forming right habits, and producing careful recognition of others' rights in kindly, courteous conduct with no fretfulness, discourtesy, roughness or sharp speech, because members act as the Royal Family, children of the Heavenly King. Husbands and fathers must devote time to studying the Word, receive the Word that convinces of sin, and become doers of it, so they are purified, refined, made fit to be lord of the household, overcoming all wicked passions, breathing a pure sweet atmosphere, and cultivating Christ's love as an abiding principle by loving wife and children as Christ loved the church and gave Himself to cleanse it, having been born again through God's enduring Word unto fervent love with a pure heart. Parents must live the truth at home and tenderly educate children, and this faithful practice produces a clear difference from the world. Such a home becomes a place of refreshing to worn, weary pilgrims, exerting far-reaching influence for good that other families mark and follow in guarding their homes against evil, while religion in the home extends to church, work and everywhere; this reformation must take place now because the latter rain is coming and the vessel must be cleansed from impurity to be unto honor fit for the Master's use, since no quarreling, tale-bearing, wounding of souls or injuring of reputations will enter God's city, lest a second rebellion arise, so all must learn in Christ's school to perfect Christlike character.
Judas was graciously permitted to walk in the light and was given Christ's teaching and example so he could recognize faults, repent, correct defects, conform to the Pattern by divine grace, and be purified in obeying the truth. He refused the light and did not walk in it but continued to cherish sin, indulged sin, invited temptation, let evil traits become predominant, yielded his mind to darkness, grew angry when reproved, and betrayed his Master, cultivating selfishness, pride and greed instead of growing in love for Christ because he lacked faith working through love. As with him, so with all who cherish evil under profession of godliness and hate those who condemn their sin, for connection with Christ and His followers is granted to the faulty in character not because of defects but notwithstanding them, to give opportunity for purification.
Faithful servants must present truth pure and unadulterated, and honest hearts convinced of present heresies, dissatisfied with the churches' spiritual condition, desiring change for the better and a coming up to a higher standard, will accept it and purify themselves by obeying it. Satan tracks these inquiring souls and sends one making high profession as a reformer with claims of new light, coming disguised as an angel of light as Satan came to Christ, to draw them still farther from the path of right. Turning instead to fables and false theories leaves the heart unpurified and leads to ruin in the day of trial, and one whose heart is joined to falsehood needs reconversion and new birth to discern truth and see the kingdom. Theories from the enemy that cause unbelief in God's Word take away this love-working, soul-purifying faith; though pleasing and attractive they develop into strange doctrines unsettling past experience, taking away foundation pillars, robbing of faith that shows where people live in world history, and leading into subtle errors.
A purified soul with living faith working through love is shown in daily life by practical care for others, willing cheerful service, helping the poor, comforting widows and orphans, and using means and influence for good. Fellowship with Christ is expressed in purity and holy zeal, with love for the Redeemer made visible in kind deeds and loving service, sharing with others the love received from Him. This love is proved when believers deny self, take up the cross and follow Christ, sacrifice for truth, give themselves continually to restoring others, make the needs of perishing people their own in consecrated activity, and practice self-denial including giving to relieve needs, for faith without works is dead; its sincere example is contagious and convincing and makes a deep impression as evidence that purifying faith is in the church, while professing to work for God while seeking self-benefit violates purification, retards the work and casts reproach upon it.
Purification must shape daily conduct and dealings with one another, consecrating the whole person to God and purifying thought through obedience to His law, so the Holy Spirit uses and shapes every human power while earnest prayer seeks clear understanding of His work. It is seen by resisting self, controlling passions, bearing provocation with patience, being faithful in little things, speaking and acting with kindness and respect, doing all possible good to high and low especially in the home with no harsh word, sharing what is received so others may receive saving principles, and not treating conscience carelessly or leading others astray by example. This purified, loving faith joins believers to God and equips them for service, letting truth purify them as they serve Christ with sincere love from a pure heart fervently.
The soul is purified by learning what constitutes Christian character through instruction and example, seeing errors, repenting, correcting defects and conforming to the Pattern, with truth testing and purifying followers to prepare them to overcome. Those transformed into the likeness of the Father and the Son learn to love through association with fellow workers, and living in harmony is a needed discipline that helps form this love through a faith that works by love.
Those with greater responsibilities must gain deeper knowledge of God and depend on Christ, since without Him nothing can be done, with living faith working through love shown in love for Christ and others unto sincere, fervent love from a pure heart within sober hope for grace at Christ's revelation, obedient holy living like God, and new birth by the living, abiding Word. Souls are purified by obeying the truth, and the deceived are called to return and obey; this obedience belongs to newness of life from the new birth in harmony with Christ's instruction, and sanctification is no superficial claim but must appear in conduct, words and appearance. It is joined with humility, self-denial and a single aim to glorify God, advancing toward light, exalting Jesus and His grace, and becoming acquainted with God by His help, lest prosperity without submission and sanctification stir presumption rather than a purified, loving life.
Purifying the soul by obeying the truth means heeding the Lord's reproof sent to save the soul, cherishing great light already received, softening and subduing the disposition, and letting self be crucified, for those with great light who do not cherish and obey it fail to purify their souls and will meet great loss and a hard time, left unprotected when Satan comes in great wrath with all deceivableness of unrighteousness knowing his time is short. It requires dropping false accusations and spurious visions, ceasing to weave them into everything, and working to eradicate that influence from others, especially one's own child, bringing purity of heart, holiness of character and harmony with God's people as the work God requires, opposite messages without heavenly credentials, for truth's spirit and power sanctifies the heart, purifies thoughts and cleanses the hands of the one God uses. It means attending to self instead of picking flaws in others, taking hold of united gospel and medical missionary work with heart, mind and soul, so the cleansed inner life has something to impart and power to give, with example helping others purify their souls through truth, while those teaching unsanctified cannot truly impart it, and low practice especially selfishness falls short of pure, purifying faith that cleanses the soul and works through love to refine mind, heart, will and purposes.
Genuine faith as seen in Abraham costs something, leads to willing obedience, and is not merely easy profession; giving the heart fully to Christ involves this faith and love, with love working in the heart making loyal obedience to His holy law. Obeying truth purifies the soul and works by love, bringing a person to fall on the Rock and be broken in repentance and turning to the Lord before it is forever too late, in contrast to subterfuge to accomplish one's own will and appear just, which leaves the condition grave. Failure to make God one's strength is linked with lacking this faith, while purification through belief in truth overcomes unlawful appetites and passions by the Lamb's blood and testimony in faithful duty, requires heart-searching, overcoming obstinacy and self-love, and constant earnest prayer in connection with God, for belief without faith working through love does not make the heart pure but selfishness, bitterness and unkindness reveal an unsanctified heart misrepresenting Christ.
