1 Peter 1:24

For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

All human flesh is temporary like grass that withers, and all human glory is temporary like its flower that falls away. In direct contrast, the word of God lives and abides and endures forever. That enduring word is the word preached through the gospel, the living and incorruptible seed by which people are born again. Received into the life and obeyed as truth through the Spirit, it produces faith that works by love and purifies the soul from evil tendencies and wrong traits unto unfeigned love of the brethren and fervent love for one another with a pure heart. When wholeheartedly received and obeyed it gives eternal life, enables people to meet God's requirements, and causes growth as newborn babes desiring the sincere milk of the word.

Fading Flesh, Enduring Word

All human flesh is temporary like grass that withers, and all human glory is temporary like the flower of grass that falls away. Human life and human honor are corruptible and brief, with human strength fading as grass and its flower wither and drop.

In direct contrast, the word of God and the word of the Lord lives, abides, remains permanent, and endures forever. It is living and incorruptible, set against corruptible humanity as what does not fade or fall.

Worldly ambition, worldly projects, plans, and even the greatest purposes and plans of men perish like grass and its fading flower. Human glory bound up with such ambitions shares the same fleeting character and does not last.

Usurped authority and worldly power come to an end like withering grass and falling flowers. Worldly, ambitious rulers and statesmen, and the glory attached to human power and status, are temporary and do not last. Human actions have their appointed season and are weighed by God, who judges without error and repays people according to their deeds.

Babylon's power and magnificence, once seeming enduring, passed away like a flower of grass. What lacks God as its foundation perishes, and only what is bound to His purpose and expresses His character endures, because His principles are steadfast.

Human greatness and human books fade and cannot make anyone wise unto salvation, while the Bible received as the voice of God remains to show how to reach eternal happiness and secure heavenly treasure. The testimony of those who preach Bible truth must be shaped by the Word rather than by human opinions. Science and philosophy apart from His Word do not last, unlike God's living truth which abides forever.

New Birth Through Gospel

The enduring word set against withering flesh is the word preached through the gospel to believers, the word of God that lives and abides and endures forever while all people are like grass and their glory like its flower that withers and falls away. It is the word of the Lord that endures forever, preached as gospel truth to be received into the life. Human actions have their appointed season and are weighed by a God who judges without error and repays according to deeds, but the contrast that remains is this preached, enduring word.

That enduring word is living spirit and life, the incorruptible seed by which people are born again, not of corruptible seed. Human life and honor are corruptible and temporary, withering and falling like grass and its blossom, while the word by which new birth comes lives and remains forever. Received and obeyed as truth through the Spirit, it produces faith that works through love and purifies the soul. That purifying removes inherited evil tendencies and cultivated wrong traits, and comes in no other way than by receiving and obeying the truth, producing unfeigned love of the brethren and fervent love for one another with a pure heart and with sincere love.

Faith and hope are founded not in feeling but in God and in His incorruptible word. That word is the only channel through which the Spirit operates to convince of sin and of righteousness and of judgment and to transform and save the soul. When received wholeheartedly and obeyed, the enduring word and truth gives eternal life and gives life itself, enabling people to meet God's requirements. Obedient reception causes growth as newborn babes desiring the sincere milk of the word, with cleansing and purifying of the soul unto brotherly love. Every calamity, suffering, and death evidences both the power of evil and the truth of the living God, making human weakness in yielding to satanic ingenuity after knowing the enduring word surpassingly strange.

Its enduring promises comfort believers in perplexity and trial and strengthen faith to stand firm and be finally victorious. Those who stand on the Word can remain firm amid disorder and change, unlike human calculations and the things of this world that pass away. Loss and hardship do not alter the enduring Word; they call for steadfast endurance, humility, and trust in God.

Study, Practice, and Warning

The chapter containing the declaration that all flesh is as grass is to be read, contemplated, meditated on, prayed over, cherished, and practiced in daily life with watchfulness. It gives a most precious representation of what Christians may be if they hear and obey the living seed sown in the mind that springs up and bears fruit. Time given to studying God's Word and to prayer brings a hundredfold return and makes growth appear through meditation and wholehearted devotion. The Word is to be taken individually and worked like a mine for hidden treasure.

Fathers and mothers must study this chapter with all powers of intelligence, with words and actions expressing its meaning. Ministers must give their hearers the bread of life rather than personal stories. Hunger must be cultivated for the Word of God rather than for great authors, since human greatness and human books fade and cannot make anyone wise unto salvation, while the Bible received as the voice of God remains and tells how to reach eternal happiness and secure heavenly treasure. By perusing, meditating on, and living out the enduring Word through the grace of Christ the mind is strengthened, refined, and elevated and character is fitted for immortal life, made perfect and complete.

The written Word is to be used as the weapon to meet Satan in worship and service of God alone, never turned from for human revealings, human guides, or human splendor. The chapter warns those who lift up their souls unto vanity. Its call to a godly life is to be presented to the people now, while the world is preparing for the closing work of the third angel's message, when present truth must go forth everywhere with power for the loud cry and all must work intelligently and earnestly for salvation. It instructs God's workers to labor as a people chosen out of the world who live in the world but are not of the world and are kept free from contaminating worldly influences, with medical missionary work bound up with gospel ministry and physicians and ministers laboring unitedly in soul-saving work on the platform of truth, molded after the similitude of Christ.

In distress, false accusation, and affliction the chapter means not to become exasperated, not to let the feelings of the natural heart control, and not to cherish a spirit of retaliation whatever course others pursue. It means to commit the case wholly to Jesus who died, whose hand is always stretched out in pitying tenderness to every suffering child and who is sufficient for the present hour of trial. God's Word must be practiced because precious, vital truths are bound up with eternal well-being both in this life and in the eternity opening before him, in contrast to worldly ambition, projects, plans, and even the greatest purposes of men that perish like grass. Those who are wise and lead many to righteousness receive eternal reward, and Daniel's service as Babylon's prime minister shows that a business or public leader can instead be instructed by God at every step rather than share the fleeting character of worldly, ambitious statesmen.
