Jesus Looking Upward With Open HandsBible World

1 Peter 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Blessed be God the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who in abundant mercy begets believers again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. This new birth is a real entrance of new life from Christ into the soul by faith, quickening the whole person with a new nature that rises higher through His Word, communion with God, and the abiding of Christ in the heart. The hope so given is sure and living, full of promise of immortality and glory, because Jesus Himself is that hope, having died for love, risen triumphant, ascended to plead as Advocate, and living to redeem from the enemy's power. It looks to an incorruptible inheritance reserved in heaven, even eternal life in the earth made new, kept by God's power through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Therefore believers greatly rejoice even in heaviness through manifold trials, knowing trial tests and proves faith more precious than gold unto praise at the appearing of Christ.

Wording and Context

Blessed be God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who according to abundant mercy begets again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. When the hand of faith takes hold of Christ the expression of the heart is this blessing and praise for new birth into living hope. It is the language of a soul that has received the Lord Jesus by faith into the heart, with Christ abiding within and His light shining into the chambers of the mind. It is not doleful or gloomy speech with bowed heads, but praise and joy and talk of Jesus and His love and power to save, as old a story as ever yet ever a song of joy, with as much reason to rejoice now in salvation by His death as the disciples of old had.

That hope is directed to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for those kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. It brings multiplied grace and peace and the light and presence of God, and great rejoicing even when for a season in heaviness through manifold temptation and trials and afflictions, which are the portion of those who love God. Therefore believers must cling to the Mighty One, be of good courage, believe in Jesus and trust Him implicitly even when tried as by fire, for the night is far spent and the day is at hand. The trial of faith, much more precious than perishing gold tried with fire, will be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen they love and in whom believing they rejoice with unspeakable joy full of glory, to receive the end of faith, even the salvation of souls.

The resurrection means Jesus is no longer in Joseph's new tomb but is risen. He was laid in the new rocky tomb as Surety and Substitute, then walked forth from the prisonhouse of the grave as a triumphant majestic conqueror whom death could not hold. His rising proves His character was wholly sinless, for if one single sin had tainted Him the stone would never have been rolled away and the guilty world would have perished. It vindicates His proclamation that He is the resurrection and the life.

The verse belongs to the instruction in the first two chapters of 1 Peter on living godly lives, pointing believers to the source of strength in Christ's sacrifice through which God provides all things needed for life and godliness, with Christ's perfect character making Christian perfection possible. It directs believing commandment-keeping people to their special work as faithful laborers together with God in the salvation of sinners, with every soul held responsible for the proper exercise of entrusted talents. It teaches God's workers to labor as a people chosen out of the world to remain separate from the world, living in the world without being of the world and kept free from its contaminating influences, with medical missionary work bound up with gospel ministry in unity.

The verse is food from the living oracles of God to comfort the feeble and afflicted, strengthen and bless believers, feed hungry souls who seldom have preaching, bestow God's love in large measure upon His chosen ones, and shine truth upon the pathway to call those not of faith to walk in the light. Its meaning is to shape words and actions, and it belongs to counsel to be heard and obeyed. It gives instruction to be read, contemplated and prayed over by those afflicted by the words and course of others, that Jesus knows it all, that sufferers must not become exasperated or let the feelings of the natural heart control them, must cherish no spirit of retaliation, need not be a sin-bearer for any soul, can thank God when innocent of accusation, and can commit their case wholly to Jesus who died for them, whose hand is stretched out in pitying tenderness to every suffering child and who is sufficient for the present hour of trial. This speech belongs to those living very near the end of this world's history who have faith that works by love and purifies the soul, who take an active part in cooperating with Christ, who are given life and vigor in all mental and spiritual powers, and who see correctly the things that are invisible.

Mercy, Rebirth and Hope

According to abundant mercy God gives believers new birth and new life into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This new birth is the foundation for confident expectation, looking toward the inheritance kept in heaven and giving strength to remain faithful and undefiled. It is part of God's complete provision for believers, sustaining them through trials that test and strengthen faith and prepare them for salvation and Christ's appearing. Believers are kept by God's power through faith for salvation to be revealed at the last time.

Being begotten again is being quickened together with Christ and made alive with Him, in which new life from Christ enters the soul. By faith this new life takes hold of the whole person and a new, strong hope is grasped. It imbues the soul with the quickening power of a new nature that enables it to rise higher and still higher. This renewed life and strength come through communion with God and trust in the fullness of Christ's Word, with Christ abiding in the heart by faith. His Word is the bread of life and the water of salvation received through constant communion, and by eating His flesh and drinking His blood spiritual strength is gained, for Christ supplies the lifeblood of the heart while Christ and the Holy Spirit give nerve power.

This living hope is unlike hope arising from the natural heart, for it is assured of fulfillment and full of the promise of immortality and glory. It grounds identity in God's love and redemption through Christ rather than in fear or temptation. Jesus Himself is the living hope, and through His suffering and death sinners are redeemed from the enemy's power, giving courage to endure trials. Because He lives and rules, believers can trust Him amid corruption, violence and injustice.

The hope rests on Jesus dying to prove His love, rising in triumph over the tomb, ascending to heaven and standing before the Father as Advocate pleading pardon for repenting believing children who trust Him as a little child trusts loving parents. It rests also on Christ giving His sinless life for sinners so that those in covenant who repent and believe receive His merits and stand innocent before the Father. His death and resurrection opened the door of hope, without which humanity would have known only darkness and despair. Through Him people are rescued from darkness and despair and may rejoice in hope, receiving pardon and peace through His merits and atoning blood, washed from sin, clothed with His righteousness, and fitted to live in heaven.

The promise is clear evidence that God desires to bless His people and can be trusted to fulfill His promises even beyond what they expect. It shows the extensive privilege of coming into close relationship with Christ. It means God places immense value on the wholly surrendered agent, loving the obedient believer as His own Son. Provision is made to deliver believers from enemies to serve without fear in holiness and righteousness, to be delivered from the devices of evil men and angels and to break the bonds of sin and Satan by always looking to Jesus as author and finisher of faith.

Inheritance Kept in Heaven

The living hope to which abundant mercy begets again by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead looks toward an inheritance that is incorruptible and undefiled, that does not perish or fade away, reserved in heaven for believers. That hope is new birth and new life into confident expectation, grasped by faith as the foundation of strength to remain faithful and undefiled. It reaches to what is kept in heaven for those who love God and are kept by His power through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

That inheritance is eternal life in the earth made new, the sure and unfading possession secured by God's power through faith. It is the many mansions in the Father's house which Christ went to prepare, to be received when He comes again to take His people to Himself to be where He is. By receiving Christ believers become adopted sons and daughters, heirs with Christ to an immortal inheritance, so that self-denial and self-sacrifice in following Him give no cause for regret. This new birth makes the obedient rich by title to imperishable wealth, holding through the righteousness of Christ a claim to the priceless gift of eternal life, with the heart reposing upon the promise of full and free salvation and a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Mere profession is of little advantage unless this hope of everlasting spiritual victory is kept in view in running the race, with the daily fructifying influence of the Holy Spirit quickening purposes into life and productiveness lest one fall back into the past life.

Those who look to this inheritance are kept and guarded by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. That keeping brings multiplied grace and peace and the light and presence of God. Human intelligence and words and riches cannot keep them, so they are to seek help and deliverance in God with confidence in His promise as they await Christ's appearing.

The last time is now and may be personally appropriated today for a useful life during the short sojourn here, requiring a clean and pure heart sanctifying the Lord in the heart. It points to the very last days and the very close of this earth's history, when the Son of man is soon to be revealed in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory with reward for the obedient.

Rejoicing Through Trials

The living hope given by the resurrection calls for joy and not for gloom with bowed heads, for Jesus is no longer in the tomb but risen. That joy remains even when for a season there is heaviness through manifold temptations and severe trials, and it looks forward to an incorruptible, undefiled, unfading inheritance reserved in heaven for those kept by God's power through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time, even the very last days and close of earth's history when the Son of man is revealed with power and great glory with reward for the obedient. Instead of looking on the dark side, believers are to talk faith and encourage faith, talking of Jesus and His love and His power to save from sin as an old story that is a song of joy, with as much reason to rejoice now as the disciples of old had. Even those who have sinned and fallen can rejoice in this hope because Christ has risen, as Peter did after his fall.

Trials, afflictions, difficulties, disappointments and grief from various trials are the portion of those who love God. They test the intensity of love and fidelity, and faith must overcome them, working an experience of highest value to stand in this last time and sustaining and strengthening faith in preparation for salvation and Christ's appearing. No trial comes casually or out of the earth but in God's providence, while every step heavenward is opposed by evil angels cooperating with evil men. Therefore believers must cling to the Mighty One, be of good courage, believe in Jesus and trust Him implicitly even when tried as by fire, for the night is far spent and the day is at hand. Bearing burdens for Christ and serving Him in complete surrender of the will to God's will is the measure of love for Him, so believers must not seek easy places or follow the majority but follow on to know the Lord and follow the Lamb wherever He goes, meeting the powers of darkness as He met them and enduring temptation as He endured it, for partakers with Him of His sufferings will be partakers with Him of His glory.

The trial of faith is much more precious than perishing gold tried with fire. It will be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. Loving Him unseen and believing in Him without seeing, believers rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, to receive the end of faith, even the salvation of souls.

Those afflicted by the words and course of others are given instruction to be read, contemplated, and prayed over, teaching that Jesus knows it all. They must not become exasperated nor let the feelings of the natural heart control them, and must cherish no spirit of retaliation. They need not be a sin-bearer for any soul, and when innocent of accusation they can thank God. They can commit their case wholly to Jesus who died for them, whose hand is stretched out in pitying tenderness to every suffering child and who is sufficient for the present hour of trial.

Hope Fulfilled in History

The disciples were begotten again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. As the risen Jesus opened and explained the Scriptures concerning Himself, their faith was kindled and their hope revived and grew even before they recognized who He was. Their assurance therefore rested not only on seeing the risen Lord but also on the evidence of Old Testament prophecies and symbols pointing to Him.

Those who had been deeply disappointed were likewise begotten again to a living hope when by faith they saw Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary as their compassionate High Priest, soon to come as King and Deliverer. Their renewed hope brought joy in recognizing that God had guided them and that their work had not been in vain, just as the disciples rejoiced when they saw the risen Lord. The message of the Saviour's love and the assurance of pardon and peace through His atoning blood inspire an immortal hope, as was seen when Luther separated from Rome.

Doctrine and Christian Growth

Through a knowledge of God are given all things that pertain to life and godliness. By abundant mercy and by the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ every provision has been made for believers to receive them. God calls believers to the highest standard of glory and virtue, to be sanctified wholly in soul and body and spirit. The perfection of Christ's character makes that perfection attainable by learning His meekness and lowliness and by knowing God and Jesus Christ.

There is necessity to exercise faith constantly in this lively hope. This world is an educating school preparing its learners to graduate to the higher school above, and eternal destiny is decided by personal course of action. Those begotten again to this hope must form such characters in this life that they can be welcomed into the mansions Christ has gone to prepare. They must not misapprehend God's claims nor neglect to apply great truths to little things, since little things constitute the discipline of life and train the soul and develop character for the courts above. The grace of Christ works in and with every child of God while pressing from light to greater light and from strength to greater strength, until more than conqueror through Him that loved him and gave Himself for him, complete in Him, not with his own righteousness but with the righteousness which is by faith in Jesus Christ.

Knowing this living hope leads to seeking the Lord with all the heart, loving God and keeping His commandments. Being begotten again to a lively hope means stepping over the line God has marked out onto the path of implicit obedience that leads close to the Redeemer, with converted body and soul in harmony with the laws of God, daily receiving renovating grace. It makes the person rich by title to an immortal inheritance, walking in the path of the overcomer with a title that will stand the test of law, holding through the righteousness of Christ a claim to the priceless gift of eternal life, with the heart reposing upon the promise of full and free salvation, imperishable wealth, and a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Mere profession is of little advantage unless this hope of everlasting spiritual victory is kept in view as the race is run to be worthy to share life with Christ and the fullness of the immortal inheritance. The daily fructifying influence of the Holy Spirit must quicken purposes into life and productiveness, or a person will fall back into the same channel as the past life.

Faithful Living and Mission

The blessing for being begotten again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is given to the church to awaken it to its calling. Awakened, the church is to labor for the salvation of those who do not know God. That labor is to be done with self-denial and sacrifice and with lives that show its prayers are sincere. The same instruction directs believing, commandment-keeping people to their special work as faithful laborers together with God in the salvation of sinners, with every soul held responsible for the proper exercise of the talents entrusted to him.

This praise is the language of a soul that has received the Lord Jesus Christ by faith into the heart, with Christ abiding in the heart and His light shining into the chambers of the mind. It is not doleful or gloomy speech but praise to God the Father for abundant mercy begetting again to a lively hope. That speech belongs to those living very near the end of this world's history. They have the faith that works by love and purifies the soul, take an active part in cooperating with Christ, are given life and vigor in all mental powers and spiritual exercises, and see correctly the things that are invisible. Receiving the promise of the last time, which is now and may be personally appropriated today, requires sanctifying the Lord in the heart with a clean and pure heart, and this is necessary for a useful life during the short sojourn here.
