1 Peter 2:14
Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
Governors are those sent by and acting under the supreme king or ruler to punish those who do evil and to praise or commend those who do good. In this role civil government exists to restrain evil and to protect people from violence. Its authority is limited to civil affairs and has no role in religion or the church.
Submitting to the king as supreme and to governors as sent by him, including obeying civil ordinances, is lawful and right for Christians to do for the Lord's sake. Believers should therefore act carefully and avoid any unadvised word or action that leaves a wrong impression and awakens prejudice. Such carelessness cuts off influence, ties the hands, and hedges up or obstructs the work.
