A Traveler Leaves a Burning City Toward the Lightby sanjalberts

1 Peter 2:9

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Believers are a chosen people who belong to God as His royal family, set apart as holy and distinct from the world because He has brought them out of darkness into His wonderful light. Their calling is to show forth His praises by proclaiming His goodness and reflecting His character in word and life. This means turning from fleshly lusts and worldly customs to live in obedience to His commandments with honest conduct, purity, and good works that lead others to glorify Him. It requires growing up into Christ and partaking of His divine nature, so that sanctified lives, cheerful witness, and self-sacrificing service confirm the truth they profess. In the last days this distinct, commandment-keeping people make God known by standing apart from the world, upholding His law including the Sabbath, and proclaiming His near coming.

Identity and Calling

Believers are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people belonging especially to God, set apart and distinct from the unbelieving world. They are called out of darkness into His marvelous light for the purpose of showing forth His praises, proclaiming His goodness and reflecting His character and making His goodness known by their lives. As a church they represent God's family and shine as lights in the world, consecrated to serve Jesus Christ. This calling is not a life of bondage or a promotion of their own sufficiency and glory, but a high position and work of honoring God. Their distinctness makes imitation of Christ essential.

Showing forth His praises means living as strangers and pilgrims who abstain from fleshly lusts that war against the soul. It means keeping conduct honest among unbelievers so that even those who speak against them as evildoers will see their good works and glorify God in the day of visitation and salvation. For those holding sacred trusts this forbids disobedience, unthankfulness, unholiness, condemnation, harshness and self-serving, and requires earnest striving for perfection of character in order to surround others with a life-giving holy atmosphere that revives humble and contrite hearts. The spirit and character revealed is forming their own destiny and will appear in the judgment. This identity calls commandment-keepers to holiness, so that sexual sin dishonors God and reproaches the truth, and calls the faithful to be a living example of the blessings of God's requirements as in earlier times.

The surrounding call is to draw together in humility and unity, helping one another to be one as Christ is one with the Father. Their calling includes representing Christ and proclaiming the last message of mercy, standing for God's commandments and shining as a witness to nations perishing in sin. Their distinction is not in following the world's fashions and customs but in living in connection with heaven, gathering rays of light from Christ and reflecting His light. In that purpose they work with Christ, love those for whom He died, build up His kingdom on earth, and bless those around them.

Showing forth praises requires growing up into Christ the living head in all things and manifesting His divine attributes to the world. It requires representing Christ with praise rather than letting depression or discouragement obscure witness, educating heart and lips to praise God for His love, and looking in hope to light from the cross and from Calvary. Walking thus in the rays of His righteousness, believers see salvation near and rejoice in hope of immortality. It requires developing every talent to produce the very best results in displaying God, when the mind is enlightened by God's word opened to the understanding. This is lived out by growing in grace and in knowing Jesus Christ, recognizing personal imperfection and ignorance, constantly preserving and stretching the powers of mind to become an intelligent Christian, and grasping knowledge with all faculties when filled with the Spirit of Christ, without which education loses its true brightness and glory.

Acceptable spiritual sacrifices are not made when men in great responsibility magnify themselves and dishonor God, grow earthward, regard self as of great importance, let selfishness attach to their work, and show no devotion to God and no spiritual life in Jesus Christ. Elevated position gives no liberty to turn from Bible principles to finite judgment and no power to sanctify the heart or develop character. Each man proves whether he will reveal God's character by being worked by the Holy Spirit or reveal weak finite humanity by working himself so that Satan works him. Christ is precious only to those who believe, make Him their righteousness, place Him as the honored memorial cornerstone, and cherish and act upon His lessons of humility, mercy, justice and love of God. Those who accept God as Sovereign take the oath of allegiance, put on the Christian uniform, bear aloft the banner showing whose army they belong to, and make open avowal of allegiance to Christ, for concealment is impossible, bearing Christ's impress in sanctified works.

Orderly, attractive camp arrangements display those praises and bear witness to the importance of the truth proclaimed and to the missionary spirit of the gospel. Distinct calling means believers must not shape conduct or witness merely to please the world, but honor the light God has given. As a spiritual priesthood they are to offer spiritual service to God and use gifts and time in earnest, self-sacrificing work that blesses others and promotes His glory, rather than in selfish pleasure or amusement. Being called out of darkness into light calls them to leave society's customs and bondage when these conflict with faith, and to stand openly for right even if counted singular. They are chosen to be living, active, working witnesses from the first moment of religious life, depending on God and trusting Christ as Head of the church, growing into the divine likeness by laboring to call sinners to repentance and thereby making God known, including ministering to the sick to reveal His grace and glorify His name.

Believers show praises by keeping His commandments, living in harmony with His law, remembering His goodness and love, and making His Word the rule of life, thus representing Christ and displaying His character. God calls them out of darkness into marvelous light so they can proclaim His praises by speaking of His goodness, power and deeds for their souls, with conversion letting light of truth shine more powerfully as God leads step by step by light of His presence. Truth sanctifies their lives, enabling them to see Christ as He is. They show His praises through words that bless others and communicate righteousness, and through good conduct and righteous works that display His grace and lead others to glorify God. This continues God's dealing with Israel as a holy people chosen to be special above all people, not for number but because the Lord loved them and would keep the oath to their fathers, bringing them out with a mighty hand and redeeming them from bondage as the faithful God keeping covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments, promising that if they obey His voice and keep His covenant they shall be a peculiar treasure above all people, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Contemplation must be set on higher things than worldly amusements, with blessing others by words and conduct.

Fulfilling the calling means loving the Lord with all heart, soul, strength and mind and loving neighbor as self, with those words engraved on the tablets of the heart, even though the world counts such love extreme. It means bearing much fruit to God's glory, revealing a faith that works by love and purifies the soul, and by well-doing putting to silence the ignorance of foolish men. It means meeting in confession with earnest prayer, seeking God for guidance, humbling hearts before Him, drawing together in confidence, trusting Christ at the Father's right hand to present confession and humiliation, receiving His gracious merciful self-revelation, and restoring the wounded to wholeness instead of cutting them off. It involves doing appointed work without all going over the same ground, living up to requirements that will distinguish commandment-keepers in the judgment, practicing all claimed belief as truth fitting and qualifying for the kingdom, and proclaiming the Lord's near coming. Distinct standing carries high responsibility, and unless believers live up to God's requirements they cannot be saved, so the whole chapter around the verse should be studied and practiced with watchfulness and prayer.

Under reproach, unrighteous tribunals, imprisonment and death, those who believe in Christ as the precious chief cornerstone show forth His praises by loving Jesus, refusing to deny His name, and holding to truth and the law of God when commanded by persecuting powers to give it up. To such tempest-tried souls Christ is near and precious and their life is preserved to eternal life and glory. This stands in contrast to the disobedient builders who reject the stone and stumble at the word, as the Jewish people to whom Christ became a rock of offense and stone of stumbling through disobedience, though He would have been the rock of their salvation if received. God's people are set apart and called out of darkness to be separate from the world and distinguished as His own, serving Him fully, nobly and wholeheartedly, taking no honor to themselves and keeping solemn covenant to serve the Lord alone. This calling is lived out by loving God supremely and neighbor as self, abstaining from desires that war against the soul, living honorably, and answering for hope with meekness and clear conscience, for doing good with honest conduct is God's will.

God has separated His people from others to be His own, and Christ's impress must appear in sanctified works that show forth His praises. Cherishing the truths of Matthew 5 and heeding every divine specification in it works transformation of character that makes believers a chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation and peculiar people, showing forth God's praises by showing forth the virtue of Christ's character. To be a Christian and follower of Christ is the highest position attainable, not a disgrace, and this elevation comes only through the merits of Christ's blood. Being called out of darkness into marvelous light means restoration after the fall through Adam, when the race had no hope and was cut off from God, because Christ consented to take the work of restoration and offered Himself as substitute to bring the race back into the Father's favor, which must be accepted, for without accepting Christ as substitute elevation is impossible. All claiming Christ as personal Saviour must therefore deny self, take up the cross and follow Him, and as laborers together with God show forth praises, responding to Christ's drawing with speech and lives of willing obedience, using talents to advance God's glory as channels of light.

Showing Forth Praises

Fulfilling the calling means abstaining from fleshly lusts that war against the soul and keeping conduct honest among unbelievers, so that those who speak against believers as evildoers will see good works and glorify God in the day of visitation. It means being called out of the darkness of error into the light of truth to acknowledge God's gift of Jesus, the forgiveness of sins, and Christ's imputed righteousness. The Lord has a work for every one to do and will bless every faithful worker, who cannot afford to walk in their own wisdom because this is not safe. The subjects of Christ's kingdom are elect sons of God, members of His body with Christ Himself as head; no highest earthly education, forms and ceremonies, or much study of books can make anyone a subject of that kingdom, for eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. In strong contrast to murmurers and complainers, God's people fear the Lord as His jewels to be spared as a son that serves his father and discern between righteous and wicked, with supernatural results seen when the human will is under control of God's will. As sons and daughters of the eternal God made royal priests, a holy nation and a special people who are Christ's property, His field and His building, they reverence themselves and reveal God's wisdom and Christ's righteousness by watching, standing fast in faith, acting with strength, doing all things with charity, and standing fully armed against principalities, powers and spiritual wickedness.

Those called from darkness into Christ's light represent Christ by letting light be seen and speaking God's praises, not letting depression and discouragement obscure witness, but finding hope in light shining from the cross unto joy in salvation and hope of immortality. They show the power of the One who called them by speaking truth as it is in Christ, without allowing tradition, blindness, or human opinion to obscure it. God has placed them in an elevated position above the world as a chosen, holy people and royal priesthood to show forth His praises and glorify Him. The elements that work harmoniously together are those who do not betray sacred trusts and who seek to build up and not to tear down. Israel's deliverance from Egypt illustrates the calling, for God brought them out of bondage to teach them that He alone is the true and living God in whom they must trust, setting obedient believers apart from the world to show forth His praise. Declaring His praises means awakening out of sleep, being born again, opening the heart to faith that works by love and sanctifies the soul, cherishing commanded love for one another, loving the brethren, being pitiful and courteous, laying aside envy, suspicion, accusing, every weight and easily besetting sin, running the race with patience while looking to Jesus as author and finisher of faith with eyes and minds fixed on Him in faith and confidence, and working with Him with the help of a sympathizing Saviour, with promise of being made partakers of Christ if the beginning of confidence is held steadfast to the end.

The purpose is fulfilled when a sanctified and holy people keep God's standard uplifted and show through daily life that professed truth produces righteousness and sustains spiritual life. As a denominated people following Christ's perfect pattern, believers cannot perfect true moral character of themselves, but by accepting Christ's righteousness as propitiation, repenting, receiving forgiveness, and being made partakers of His righteousness, they become partakers of the divine nature and escape corruption in the world through lust. Living faith rests in and rejoices in that light each day, and those who do so become a light in the world. Showing forth praises means making known what has been learned of Christ and the truth, as the Samaritan woman did when she urged others to come and meet Him. Conduct including confession of sin should show forth His praises, with public confession fitting only when it truly serves that purpose rather than harming others. Believers are exhorted to live godly lives as God's chosen people called from darkness into light.

God calls His people to be a holy people whose lives, sanctified by the Spirit of truth, bear witness to and confirm the truth they proclaim, letting marvelous light reach the world to call people out of darkness. This requires constantly reaching upward to God, talking little of self and much of Jesus, dwelling on His matchless charms, remembering His life of self-denial, self-sacrifice, privation and abuse endured on the cruel cross, being thankful rather than exalting self or dwelling on trials, refusing gloom and walking in light because Jesus lives and is not in Joseph's new tomb, making intercession without forgetting for one brief moment, and remaining with those who obey what He commanded even unto the end of the world. Followers are to represent Him and be like Him in manner and conduct. Walking in that light requires daily conversion and full surrender to God's will, giving safety and faithfulness when tested and opposed. Those redeemed by Christ's blood must give God supreme affection of the soul and do God's will instead of their own way, and by eating the Bread of Life become stalwart Christians who maintain spirituality; seeking wisdom from God enables them to represent Christ's character in all walks of life, so words and actions are a savor of life unto life and make a favorable impression on others regarding professed truth.

The calling is shown in lives that praise God by resisting fleshly desires that war against the soul, giving up debasing vices, and cultivating purity and holiness after being called from former darkness into light and obtaining mercy. As living stones in God's temple, followers let that light reach those around them and work cheerfully for Him, for a gloomy, despondent, doubting manner weakens words and fails to glorify the Redeemer. The remnant as chosen people, royal priesthood, holy nation and people belonging specially to Him are to keep God's commandments and the testimony of Jesus, while Satan seeks to hinder by hiding that light, fostering distrust and disbelief, and opposing their efforts. It is the work of youth in Christian schools to acquire knowledge of the most high God, make Him known as the only true God, learn to present Christ as sin-pardoning Saviour, and gather precious rays of light to spread light to others, showing His loving-kindness and glory. God's people remain distinct and peculiar, standing apart from worldly policy and avoiding alliances with those who cannot discern the claims of God's law. Their distinct identity comes from belonging to God as a peculiar people, holy nation and royal priesthood, trusting in the Lord rather than relying on people, with God's power enabling victory against opposition.

As a holy nation set apart from the world and made distinct by faith, believers display God's character through zealous good works so others see their lives and glorify God, lived through sanctification by truth and faith in Christ, with baptism pledging them to witness and Christ's merits making them heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. Chosen and honored through mercy and Christ's costly redemption, they are to be purified as His own people zealous for good works, standing apart from the unbelieving world in character and conduct, preserved by watchfulness, earnest prayer, faith and obedience, since professing membership without obedient service does not prove it. Called out of darkness into Christ's marvelous light, they as Christ's children are renewed in His image as children of light who do not walk in darkness but have the light of life, and closeness to Christ strengthens them to resist the enemy. In ministry to the sick, workers represent Jesus and reveal God's grace through character as living witnesses of truth and righteousness and living instruments that glorify Christ. Chosen, holy and distinct from the world, they are sanctified through truth and through faith in Christ and His righteousness become one in Him; their lives and good works shine before the world so people glorify the Father. As faithful minute-men always ready, they declare God's goodness and direct the weary, heavy-laden, poor, broken-hearted and perplexed to Jesus as source of all spiritual strength, by receiving heavenly inspiration through the Holy Spirit, speaking eternal principles of truth in love in words that reform but do not exasperate, with force and power supplied by Christ, telling with pen and voice that Jesus lives to make intercession.

God's people are to be holy and distinct from the world in spirit, pursuits and practice, with the difference becoming more marked as the end approaches; being God's people is established not by professing faith or having a name on a church roll, but by vital union with Christ, sharing His Spirit and divine nature, being crucified to worldly affections and desires, and being renewed in knowledge and true holiness. Those called from darkness to light sound forth God's praises by showing His loving-kindness and speaking of His glory, a work belonging to youth in schools whose education is to gain knowledge of the only true God and learn to present Christ as sin-pardoning Saviour, gathering light to spread light, with the Holy Watcher expected to come among them to make this possible. Those once disobedient and outside His people are made by mercy into a chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation and His own people to proclaim His praise. Those made free in Christ through knowledge of truth are specially favored and entrusted with responsibility to share the good news of salvation with every nation, kindred, tongue and people. Distinction from the world comes not by profession alone but by the Spirit's purifying influence and lives marked by Christlike character and unselfish love, with words and actions carrying truth and holiness to others; love for believers and neighbors leads to sacrifices to persuade people to leave sin and accept truth, truth rooted in the heart bears righteous fruit, neglecting received light loses its benefit, while humility, obedience and faithfulness bring promised mercy and truth. Holiness and distinctness do not come from clothing, yet as a holy people choices and conduct should not make them resemble the world; they consecrate themselves to God and use abilities to prepare others for the day of judgment.

Jesus calls people out of darkness into marvelous light to show forth His praises. That calling gives reason for fervent gratitude, expressed in gifts and sacrifices, with prayers and alms rising before God as a memorial like fragrant incense. Chosen and accepted by Him and set apart as distinct, God's people live as examples of holiness, separated from the world's friendship and spirit to remain united to the Lord; their lives and the light of truth given them can enlighten others, while those who neglect or reject that light are judged by it. By the message of gospel truth given through the church, God calls people out of darkness so a world to be saved may see Christ revealed in His saints, who stand as a holy, commandment-keeping people in right relation to God, knowing what He requires, revealing justice and mercy and a humble walk with God at home and abroad, assured sins are forgiven and they are accepted as children of the Most High, with lives sanctified by the Spirit of truth bearing witness to the message and giving a demonstration of practical Christianity as lights to a world lying in darkness and perishing for lack of knowledge. Those called from darkness into Christ's light make God's praises visible in how they live and speak, circumspect yet cheerful and happy, for pride, selfishness and foolish joking dishonor God, deny faith, and hinder thoughtful, earnest service. Receiving special favor and light brings obligation to live obediently and let light shine to others to glorify God, as a distinct, holy people entrusted with truth.

Holiness and Separation

The verse is addressed to God's people today as the Israel of today, chosen to display His praise by clinging strictly to Him and meeting all His requirements, including the true plan of healthful living. Where ancient Israel failed to fulfill God's purpose and missed health and prosperity, the same faithfulness now will bring the same results seen in Joseph and Daniel, in Moses and Elijah, making believers the world's object-lesson of health and prosperity and proving they have been called out of darkness into marvelous light. The calling is to show forth God's praises, and a cheerful conduct and speech befits it, while frivolous talk after sacred work contradicts it and dishonors God and the truth. God calls His people from darkness into marvelous light to show His praise and be zealous of good works, not hiding faith but letting life shine so that religion appears desirable. The light shared is heavenly, reflecting the divine nature, and as believers experience the fullness of salvation they praise God more, testify more decidedly to His goodness, and influence others toward salvation. To fall from this holy calling as His peculiar people and join works of darkness is to depart from identity and incur His displeasure. God's people are to be distinct in faith and character, avoiding worldly customs and policies and living by a standard far above the world's. They are a separate, holy people favored with light and sacred truth, and that standing obliges obedience and service and letting received light shine so others receiving truth will glorify Him, a duty whose neglect they must answer for.

Those called out of darkness into Christ's light are God's chosen, set apart as a holy nation belonging to Him, a royal priesthood who must openly show whose they are with Christ's character visible in life to proclaim His praise. Believers hold royal birth as sons and daughters of God purchased by His dear Son, a standing lasting as eternity, and declaring His goodness means honoring Christ by obedience that reverences self as His purchase, being lifted up in Him, and developing every God-given faculty fully to be models in speech, spirit and conduct. In daily business this means treating every other mind as God's property with kindness, pity, courtesy and tenderness, without overbearing manner or provoking words, and using every chance for mental improvement to work for God and help others do the same. They are not to live as sad, discouraged orphans but may call God Father, with His love, peace, hope and joy evident in face, words, life and thoughts of His goodness, loving-kindness, patience, compassion and long-forbearance. That royal birth and high destiny as sons and daughters of God gives reason for self-respect and for developing powers for service to God and salvation of souls. Being God's peculiar people called to holiness is shown in temperance in all things rather than living to gratify appetite, in preparation for the society of heavenly angels. God calls His people from the darkness of error into the light of truth, and those receiving it should use influence to lead others in the right direction, beginning with their families.

Displaying His praise requires steadfast integrity rooted in genuine sanctification, where true principle does not weigh consequences, human opinion or worldly prospects but longs to know God's will so works glorify Him. God gives divine grace to control heart and life, and all natural ability, culture and honored position are yielded to its sanctifying influence so believers shine as burning lights. That light makes faith known to associates, ennobles life and beautifies character, and when God delivers His faithful servants His power and majesty are displayed before the world, proving He stands with the oppressed against earthly powers that trample His authority, with Jesus Himself present beside them in trial. Christ's redeemed are His precious and peculiar treasure, regarded in their purity and perfection as the reward of His suffering, humiliation and love and as adding to His glory, with all glory radiating from Him. God's people are to keep a separate, holy, distinctive character, and their virtuous lives and unselfish acts display the righteousness He produces, lead others to desire it, and honor and glorify Him, while friendship with the world compromises it, dishonors Him and reproaches His cause, so separation and obedience to His word are essential to receiving His blessings. As His own distinct from the world, even clothing should reflect distinction and glorify Him, with simple dress rebuking pride, vanity and extravagance, as Israel's blue ribbon marked them as peculiar though Christians are not required to wear a special mark, showing He notices His people's dress. The description as chosen and peculiar belongs to those faithful and obedient to His commandments and the testimony of Jesus, whose perfect faith, love and obedience in Christ make them a blessing whose light dispels darkness, elevates others and helps the willing know truth. Showing forth the praises of the One who called them from darkness means speaking of Christ and redemption, for those who have found Jesus abiding in the heart should not stay silent but let others know He is precious and has put a new song of praise in the mouth.

The church is described as a holy, distinctive people, and it lost that peculiar character, whereas keeping it would have retained the Holy Spirit's power given to the disciples, bringing healing, casting out of devils, and power making it a terror to enemies. Those who receive God's word become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King, and searching the word prepares and purifies them for that status. The verse identifies God's people as chosen, set apart and called from darkness into light to show His praises, applied to His people today so that faithful living including obedience in health reform displays the calling and can bring the blessings of obedience. As a chosen generation, holy nation and people set apart for Him, they must live up to identity by reaching a high standard and being zealous of good works. His peculiar people are a people He is purifying who are preparing to be translated without seeing death, and their exalted calling and profession require them to be ahead of others in good works and in cleansing from sin, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Believers are to praise Him for calling them from darkness into marvelous light, and gathering each Sabbath their songs and heartfelt response to the message of life can express gratitude and show they received the message as from heaven.

Those called from darkness into Christ's light are to make His goodness known by living as lights and faithfully representing Him, seeking His honor rather than self-praise and showing humility, courtesy and grace toward others. The calling to show His praises is shown by making soul-saving the constant aim while abiding in Christ, with the question of what has been done to show His praises waking from spiritual sleep to receive His light. The converted receive heavenly light, grow to maturity in Christ, and bear witness before others including the powerful and respected, for the gospel not science or literature brings light to the darkened mind and makes believers living witnesses whose godly character influences others. God's people as chosen, set apart and called from darkness into marvelous light are to show His praises by uplifting Christ before the world, and in union with Him human nature is lifted up. Those who have Christ and receive riches of grace are called from darkness into marvelous light, and a heart filled with heavenly treasures naturally shows His praises to others. As holy nation, peculiar people and chosen generation they are to be sanctified through truth and by lives and good works show a world dead in sin that they belong to God.

Believers are called out of the world to live as His peculiar people, a holy nation and royal priesthood, cherishing and steadfastly maintaining the principles of the calling and remaining faithful to God and one another while waiting for Christ's return. They are a holy, chosen people set apart from the world and made zealous for good works, sanctified through truth so faith and life distinguish them from the world and witness for Christ, and through His merits their light shines so good works bring glory to God. Those called from darkness into marvelous light should show His praises by gratefully remembering and speaking of His mercies, trusting Him rather than yielding to anxiety, and praising Him daily including in trial. God calls from spiritual darkness into marvelous light to glorify Him by showing His praises, lived out through earnest heart-searching, confession and forsaking of sin, and opening the heart to Jesus whose grace and love abide through living faith and bring every power into His service. The believer in Christ is consecrated to high and holy purpose as part of the royal priesthood whose service eclipses the Aaronic glory, set apart by divine grace, invested with Christ's righteousness and imbued with the Holy Spirit, offering sacrifices of a broken and contrite heart as a true representative of the Redeemer in whom God delights.

God's people belong to Christ as His own purchased possession, bought at a price no human can measure, so no person has authority to take control of them or their souls as another's property. As chosen and set apart they are entrusted with a special solemn message to sanctify life and share with the world, and claiming identity while failing to show truth's power in zealous works leaves them in spiritual darkness, not because light diminished but because they do not walk in it. Having been called from darkness into marvelous light they must let light shine before others so good works lead people to glorify the Father in heaven. Showing praises of Him who called them from darkness means decided change from life before accepting Christ and truth, with earnest effort to overcome natural inclinations to wrong and conquer old habits and practices while putting on His righteousness. It is seen in home and daily life in being tidy and orderly rather than untidy and disorderly, Christlike, neat in dress, kind and courteous in manner, pure and refined, cleansed from all filthiness of flesh and spirit and perfecting holiness in fear of the Lord, because heaven is purity and refinement and believers are to be pure and holy in their sphere as God is in His. God's elect called from darkness into marvelous light are to show His praise and shine as lights, and in Christ those who lost connection with God through sin are brought near the Father, loved with infinite love as His church, the dearest object on earth to Him. The royal people includes the sinner become child of God and member of the royal family through repentance, faith in Jesus and obedience to God's law, with Christ's righteousness credited as his own and his name recorded in the Lamb's book of life.

God's people are a distinct and holy people called to a special work and message, standing apart from political parties and worldly alliances with citizenship in heaven and Christ as Prince and head, yet without creating divisions or enemies but united, carrying the banner of God's commandments and the faith of Jesus in a spirit of reconciliation. God calls His people to be distinct and peculiar, not seeking popularity by imitating worldly customs and practices, a principle applying to a school that gives the Bible its proper place in education. In the last days when iniquity abounds and love grows cold, God will have a people to glorify His name and stand as reprovers of unrighteousness, and to be peculiar means staying true to His law when the world seeks to void its precepts, whereupon the hosts of darkness array in bitter opposition against those through whom His converting power works. They are distinguished from other religious bodies not by profession alone but by exemplary character and unselfish love, with the Spirit's purifying influence in words and actions separating them from the world and marking them as His own. Their character is to resemble Christ their holy perfect example, loving one another and neighbors and sacrificing to help people turn from sin and accept truth, with truth rooted in the heart bearing fruit in righteous words and actions conveying holiness to the world. God calls His people to be holy and live as a distinct people belonging to Him, with faith governing life and identity made clear by loyalty to His commandments including observance of the true Sabbath as a sign distinguishing those who serve Him from those who do not. They belong to a distinct nation marked by purity and holiness, bearing His stamp and standing apart from the world in a contrast so clear it arouses hostility, needing His Spirit within and Christ's work for them to receive the immortal inheritance.

Distinct Witness to World

In school and home life the praise of God is displayed by respectful speech and conduct shaped by Christ, and the chosen must make it clear by their conduct that they serve God rather than the world. Redeeming the time by making the most of what remains and laboring with God in redemption transforms character into sonship in the royal family, fitting members for companionship with angels. Children are to be faithfully trained to serve God and represent Christ, taught His requirements and led from sin's darkness into the light of His way. Merely reckoning oneself among the chosen and peculiar does not prove God's presence and saving power are at work, and profession without obedience and sanctification mistakes outward godliness for living power while remaining in darkness. Blessings, privileges and light received must be matched by life, for claiming to be God's chosen while resisting truth in practice contradicts the claim when saving power is seldom seen.

The change of being called out of darkness into marvelous light is reason to trust rather than yield to doubt and unbelief. Separation as a peculiar people means oneness with Christ, doing the word, receiving the Holy Spirit, and honoring Christ by obedient representation in keeping God's law. The line of demarcation is to stay distinct, with the world drawn over to obedience rather than the church going over to the world in transgression by conforming to its practices, customs and selfishness. God chooses His own and separates them from the world and its customs by truth, to go forward in His strength upholding His law and bearing witness. That set-apart people is appointed to sacred unselfish work under God's guidance and in fellowship, individually accountable to God rather than bound to human control. A self-indulgent ease-loving life contradicts heavenly citizenship and misrepresents Christ, and such a course cannot be publicly honored without seeming to endorse the misrepresentation. Keeping His commandments makes believers a kingdom of priests, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, standing on the platform of eternal truth in the law of God which no storm can sweep away.

As children of light the called are born again, created anew in Christ, dead to the world but alive to God with Christ dwelling in them as God's habitation through the Spirit, leaving no place for idols or friendship with the world. Their calling, character and prospects make them peculiar in spirit and practice, and as the end draws near the difference between children of light and children of darkness grows more pronounced. A humble walk with God enables those brought into light to do great good and make His praise known. Abilities, resources and influence are to be used in God's service as light-bearers zealous for good works, advancing His work so others are saved and brought to truth. Heaven's gifts entrusted to those called into light must reach others in showing forth praises, for receiving truth without sharing it leaves duty undone and must be answered for when every case is decided for life or death. Belonging wholly to the Lord is the ground of showing forth praises because He has called His people out of darkness into marvelous light. Even the weakest who exercise faith and use entrusted powers are elevated, refined and perfected in character as the Holy Spirit molds them to shine amid moral darkness as a peculiar people and holy nation.

Those called into marvelous light show praises by rejecting self-pleasing work, drawing near to Jesus who loves them and gave His life for them, catching His spirit and manner of work, and standing strong in His strength and firm in His courage. They talk and live truth and act faith with every thought and action ordered toward future immortal life, so the record kept by heavenly messengers brings no shame, toiling against Satan only a little longer until complete victory in everlasting peace, righteousness and joy in the city of God. The call leads God's children to praise Him with grateful hearts. Receiving God's image and cleansing from moral defilement prepares them for the closing scenes and for the seal of God on their foreheads. As a peculiar people distinct from the world they must guard against corrupting influence while showing compassion, especially toward children, lest they bear responsibility for their harm. Praise answers Jesus' love in bearing shame, suffering and death to give everlasting life, joined to contemplating and trusting Him who takes away sins and gives His righteousness as life, light, sanctification and righteousness. The chosen are objects of special care and love with sacred responsibility to shine as lights amid moral darkness as laborers together with God.

Genuine faith brings people out from the world to stand as God's chosen with wisdom from above, clear understanding of the foundation of faith, and a certain trumpet sound in speaking understandingly of evidences and giving reason for hope. What Israel was meant to be as chosen generation and royal nation belonged not to priests and teachers only but to the whole nation from deliverance from Egyptian bondage, placed in Canaan in possession of the vineyard hedged by kingdom laws with enlarged responsibility to dig, plant and build His temple. They were to be in the world but not of it, abhorring idolatry and forbidden intermarriage, with obedience as the condition of rich promises, called so God's kingdom should be established on earth and the whole nation accountable for talents. Words of life call from darkness to light, and received into the heart truth cleanses and transforms character. The royal, peculiar, holy nation shows God's power by speaking truth as it is in Christ without letting human tradition, selfish ideas or opinions obscure it. Lives show the gospel's power to give victory over sin and point to higher attainments in Christ, as believers receive His love and power and become a blessing around them. Believing Jesus' words and faithfully reflecting His image answers the call out of darkness, with the Word as light and guide leading out of darkness.

Those called into marvelous light show praises by speaking of Jesus, telling His mercy and power, and living blamelessly. Medical missionary work puts knowledge and every capability into action to do Christ's works and rescue from evil those willing to be rescued. Being raised from sin to righteousness fulfills the gospel's end in supreme sanctified love to God and unselfish love to others, not as fitful impulse or mere benevolence but as fruit of a heart purified from defilement and made the Spirit's abiding place, seen daily as the receiver reaches for the divine and holds the Saviour's strength. Blessings and privileges carry sacred responsibility to return fruits for advancing the kingdom and glorifying His name, with tithes and offerings sacred and returns proportionate to blessings received, and gratitude expressed in unselfish service, holiness and strict integrity. Sacred worship is to be kept distinct from common life in mind so people give their best in praising God. Where a city dominated by pride and idolatry prevents fully doing God's will, the peculiar people set apart to follow His will should go to another town, village or city with less harmful surroundings.

Profession must fit name and faith, including keeping all ten commandments especially the seventh-day Sabbath and waiting for Christ's return, which sets the peculiar people apart from worshipers of the beast and its mark. Bringing people from darkness and ignorance into the marvelous light sends workers who can serve in Christ's strength with the Spirit poured out upon them. In the last days the distinct position is especially serious, requiring imitation of Christ and walking as He walked rather than being guided by human opinions and wisdom. The chosen serve as channels of light with witness through sincere faith, obedience, love and steadfast piety rather than outward display, revealing Christ's saving power. Near the end God's people are urged to greater devotion and earnestness in sharing the Bible's warning and mercy. Sanctification through truth gives distinctive characteristics identified by keeping His commandments, not to be concealed even among higher classes.

Love makes even humble people kings and priests. Becoming children of God and members of His family requires coming out from sin and separating from corrupting influences in obedience to His precepts. Distinct identity as His peculiar people is not to be hidden from fear or shame, but light from His word is to shine steadily with plans subordinate to God's law and love for Jesus giving courage to stay faithful even at risk of life. A true ambassador shows praises with cheerful life and speech, not frivolous idle talk that dishonors God and weakens sacred truth. God's people become peculiar by coming up to His standard and meeting His test in the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, not a human requirement, and earnest decided honoring of it separates by a dividing line those who serve God from those who serve Him not. Presenting the third angel's message belongs to this calling, with the Sabbath as the point of the last great conflict between truth and error. Principles of health reform also shape this distinct identity, with hygienic restaurants serving as centers of influence to draw thoughtful people to those principles and to the message for the time.

Sabbath and Last Days

God's workers bring people into light by living faith, and those who bear light may be separated from former associations and from reliance on human help so they can be educated and qualified for the work. The calling requires prayer, diligent study of Scripture, hungering for righteousness, sincere worship and holiness, with iniquity cherished hindering prayer and defects of character weakening influence. Upholding the law and teaching truth as it is in Jesus without mixing error or fanciful ideas belongs to this distinct, holy calling out of the world. Few in number and lacking wealth, worldly wisdom and honor, those who trust God are strong and successful when they live by received light with continued growth, self-denial, self-sacrifice, and faith working by love to purify the soul. Consecration, submission to God's will and faithfulness through trial are expected, so worldly conformity, ingratitude and murmuring are inconsistent with being called out for service to worship and obey without conformity to the world. The distinct, holy community as a separate nation and peculiar people sets forth pure principles, holy ambitions and noble aspirations, with distinct gospel truths made prominent in teaching and brought into work in Christ's simplicity to keep receivers in harmony with heaven's laws.

Leading from darkness into light pictures God's individual leading toward light, as in the case of Bro. J. Distinctness as God's peculiar people forbids craving popularity or imitating worldly customs and practices to gain patronage. For schools this means giving the Bible its proper place and conducting education on God's specified plan in His word and in practical duties, not on the plan of popular schools. Teachers show forth His excellence by representing Christ, speaking for Him and showing His excellence to others. Those with faith in Christ as God's chosen people are to be holy, separate from works of darkness, pure in heart and life and unspotted from the world, preserved by standing on Bible truth from fellowship with those works.

The peculiar people set apart by the boundaries of God's word are to defend their distinctive position rather than join hands with the world, since disregarding warnings and drifting into worldliness breaks down those boundaries. Praise and obedience follow faith and love after being brought from darkness into marvelous light, with acceptance resting fully on Christ's righteousness while good works and obedience express gratitude for saving grace rather than earning heaven. Being chosen gives sanctified dignity as God's representatives in a selfish generation, carrying responsibility to uphold that dignity in service. Peculiar holiness means distinctness from the world in heart, dress, language and conduct, yet distinctness does not come from clothing itself, but because they are holy they do not adopt worldly fashions and practices. Abiding in Christ shows His praise by seeking others' salvation and living faithfully as His representatives after the call from darkness into light.

Parents are directed by the call out of darkness into marvelous light to educate children according to God's plan. Watchful waiting for Christ's return makes the distinctive holy character visible, as strangers and pilgrims not conformed to the world showing by life that they seek a heavenly home. Those called out of darkness into marvelous light are to stand forth in the world to His praise and glory. Loyalty as His peculiar people requires growing in understanding and devoted service and discerning clearly between righteousness and unrighteousness, since sin dishonors God while doing right leads to fuller knowledge of Him. Following Christ who for thirty years lived unhonored and unknown yet diligent and faithful without magnifying Himself, believers proclaim the Father's glory rather than exalting self, keeping souls open to the Sun of Righteousness and setting affection on things above.

Distinctness in dress is to be joined with good taste, order, modesty and strict cleanliness, so appearance commends itself to fair-minded observers rather than repelling unbelievers. Visible distinctness includes reform dress as a simple mark reminding to keep God's commandments and resist worldly practices, leaving idolatrous practices and unsanctified desires in leaving darkness for light. Medical institutions are to stand always as distinct and peculiar, free from worldly policy and unembarrassed by confederating with those who do not discern God's claims in His law, representing gospel medical missionary work to prepare the Lord's way. They bear witness to all nations, kindreds and tongues as loving and fearing God by keeping holy His memorial of creation, the sign between Him and obedient children that He sanctifies them, and by plainly showing faith in the soon coming of the Lord in the clouds of heaven. Refusing hoops despite claimed convenience rebukes worldly customs, accepting inconvenience rather than conforming in dress, spirit, speech and conduct.

God's heritage is wondered at as peculiar because thoroughly cleansed from false and corrupting principles, fraud and injustice, requiring decided change away from selfish, covetous principles that dishonor Christ and bar from the kingdom. Judgment is deferred to give time to be purged as a floor purged of chaff and sifted as in a sieve and to get ready to meet Him in peace, with entrants to the city having here worked righteousness, revealed heaven's principles and shown His praise by a cleansed life. Conversion answers the call from darkness by living in God's light and love and showing forth His praises. Present important truths denominate God's peculiar people, and youth must understand them to bring present truth before the public and gather enduring fruit in soul-winning. Marks of peculiarity must be kept clear and separate from the world with manifestations and evidences of power to save to the uttermost, since merely reckoning oneself chosen while like the world proves nothing, and lessening distance to the world widens distance to God.

Those called become a consecrated temple whose life and words sound forth praises, with a heart in harmony with God and taught by Christ producing gratitude, penitence, faith, love, joy and hope. God makes His people holy and distinct, separated from the world and called to obey His Word, standing where He can bestow the Holy Spirit. Everyone brought from darkness into light experiencing Christ's love is to labor together with God, a responsibility belonging to every believer and not to ordained ministers alone. Purification to become peculiar brings out from bondage and separates from human powers and refinements of fashionable life to know God and Jesus Christ and learn obedience to invisible leadership, costly lessons cheaply purchased, without which they sink to the world's level instead of standing in history as a testimony to all nations and a living illustration of the divine will as controlling power.

Harmonious united action, not many institutions, large buildings and display, completes the work, with each standing in lot and place exerting right influence in thought, word and judgment into a complete symmetrical whole, holding solid individual faith in harmony with the first, second and third angels' messages. Straightforward substantial missionary work in self-denial, self-sacrifice and true missionary spirit follows Christ in simplicity, meekness, lowliness and sanctified moral elevation, distinct from other missionary work and not taking the features called medical missionary work nor burying means and talents in city slums but carrying work in right lines, shining brighter unto the perfect day. Israel's deliverance from Egypt and preservation in the wilderness picture bringing out of the world and error's darkness into grace and truth's light, to be remembered with gratitude encouraging faithful service. The high and holy appointment out of darkness is not bondage nor occasion for self-display and self-glory but calls to turn from evil and do God's will. Turning toward light enables reflecting it in praise, with praise and love shown in the home honoring and glorifying the Redeemer.

Those entrusted with church business matters as God's elect show forth His praise and magnify His name, purchased by Christ's blood at infinite sacrifice in humiliation, expected to acknowledge truth after godliness and true holiness. The hope of eternal life promised before the world began by God who cannot lie is to be received, acted upon and brought into every relation of life. Receivers of Christ called into marvelous light show His praises, representing Christ and His kingdom's spiritual character as His light brings life to a dark-covered world. All embracing truth become as a people set apart to serve God bringing religion into everything, pleasing God by constant harmony, unity of the Spirit in peace, and love and tenderness with thorough conversion and no divisions rending the church like Christ's seamless garment, with religion in these last days to do more for claimants of Bible doctrines. Daily showing of praises means Christian politeness to God, asking Him to abide and teach obedience, teaching courtesy to Christ, speaking gently in the home church because Christ is Guest, and expressing gratitude for gifts beyond numbering.

Coming into light is personal acknowledgment of Christ and following God's will free from hindrances. Israel's standing as chosen and royal priesthood required worship of God Himself rather than symbols of His presence, so when trust shifted to the ark and God was forgotten, the symbol, outward display and glory were withdrawn for a time and the nation scattered from that chosen place. Even then the loyal and steadfast in obedience to commandments were favored with manifested presence through prayer and heavenly communion, so in captivity the inner glory of representative men shone forth. God's ambassadors show forth praises by work with understanding and sound judgment helping people see Christ and receive truth. Translation from darkness occurs when receivers of light respect and appreciate sent instruction, lay hold of precious gifts and see religious life in new light, receiving messages into hearts as a heavenly voice until transformation. Chosen and precious standing means magnifying the Lord's name by each standing in his own lot and place in harmony with God's Spirit so the work moves forward harmoniously.

Early believers as the peculiar people, though few and without wealth, worldly wisdom or honor, believed God and were strong and successful. Conformity to the world fails to stand forth as peculiar and leaves servants of God hardly distinguishable from others. God makes the obedient a holy nation and royal priesthood, cleansing hearts from evil and giving victory over enemies, to be met by cooperation and trust in God rather than trust in people.

Institutions and Mission Work

Those who have received light and salvation are to make it known to others rather than keep the blessing to themselves or leave the work to preachers, for faith lays hold on heaven's promises, walks in the light, shows others the way of life, and proclaims God's praises to a world perishing without Christ. God's people stand distinct as belonging to Him, a commandment-keeping people whose Sabbath is the distinguishing line separating them from the world, and their influence and success come from dependence on God rather than reliance on worldly institutions or those who disregard His law. Those called out of darkness into light declare God's glory by copying His character and declaring His excellencies in life character, becoming changed into Christ's likeness by beholding Him in His ministry and, imbued with the Holy Spirit, reflecting grace received to others in goodness, patience, compassion and love. This requires cheerfully employing all powers in His service while guarding mind, words and deportment with a sanctified tongue, not sinning in thought, tongue, voice or expression, since words justify or condemn and false motives, criticism and harsh condemnation reveal departure from Christ. Workers in sanitariums are to live as His peculiar people set apart for His purposes, pursuing a character fit for heaven and remaining free from worldly policy and practice. As a distinct people zealous for good works they honor the Saviour by obedience to the commandments even when obedience brings loss or obstruction, and being brought into marvelous light they praise Him in words and life, speaking of Jesus and His love and bearing witness before the world in preparation to join the redeemed in praising the Lamb.

People of every background and social position who belong to Christ are members of His royal family, for those converted from sin to holiness are children of the heavenly King and heirs with Christ, and worth and place among God's people do not depend on rank, wealth or skin color. Seventh-day Adventists are a chosen, denominated people made what they are by the whole construction of their faith, so that receiving the ideas presented in Living Temple would uproot that construction and take away that chosen separate identity. They are God's chosen peculiar people called to stand on a high plane and carry forward His work, and if faithful God will make His will known to them, working humbly with Him free from selfishness, pride and worldly ambition with desire to honor God and advance His work as those zealous to do good. Christ Himself brings transgressors of the law out of darkness into marvelous light, and through His full sacrifice bearing the penalty of transgression in His own body He makes possible obedience to the commands, conformity of character to His perfect character, renewal of God's image in the soul, sealing in obedience, and pure undefiled religion as His loyal subjects. Those called into His light make known His praise by words, actions and influence to bring souls to Christ, a calling extending beyond one's own family because every soul is precious to God and bought at the same price.

God's people are to be holy and distinct from the world, and that distinctness does not come from clothing alone but from consecration to God in every respect, with dress, speech and conduct bearing no likeness to the world and abilities used to prepare others for God. That peculiarity distinct from surrounding nations must be preserved in dress as well as in articles of faith, with every marking sign kept rather than abolished, so that even small hoops are to be laid aside because wearing them countenances a ridiculous fashion, lends it powerful influence, removes power to reprove larger hoops, and forfeits influence to bring others up in spirituality. Distinctness as a holy people requires working in different lines from the world, doing earnest solemn work in church institutions, guarding those institutions, and depending fully on God rather than unsanctified men, for consulting lawyers about church matters dishonors God, shows loss of spiritual discernment, and substitutes common human fire for God's sacred working. As His peculiar people cleansed from fraud and injustice and marked by heaven's principles, conduct must represent God to the world, claimants of His name must be changed and made righteous, and those who enter His city will have practiced righteousness here. Believers are the Lord's denominated chosen people brought from the world into light with special distinction between believers and unbelievers, a calling identifying Seventh-day Adventists brought out by truth in the present time, so that to refuse that separate standing and link with the world as if no distinction should exist denies the faith. God has a church, a people He has chosen to bear His sign and stand distinct and separate from every other nation on earth.

God has called believers out of darkness into marvelous light to show forth praises by making Him known as the only true God, presenting Christ as sin-pardoning Saviour, gathering precious rays to diffuse light again, showing loving-kindness, speaking of His glory and sounding forth praise. This calling belongs to youth in schools, who are there to gain knowledge of God for this work with expectation that the holy Watcher will come among them, and those faithful will be clothed in white robes with palms of victory standing in the heavenly courts. Those called into Christ's light make known His praises by witness and example, and recognition by Christ as undeserved favor places them under sacred obligation to devote talents to His service, work with God, and proclaim Christ as only hope and Lamb who takes away the world's sin. Set apart for Him they are to show His praise and shine as lights, with lives transformed by the Holy Spirit so they reflect God's image and reveal His character. Declaring God's glory by reflecting Christ comes through beholding Jesus in His ministry until changed into His likeness, then filled with the Spirit displaying goodness, patience, compassion and love while using abilities in service and guarding thoughts, words and conduct to honor Christ. Showing praises means uplifting the Saviour and speaking courage, faith and cheerful encouragement to workers while watching every word, refusing harshness, discouragement or gloomy testimony when the enemy presses, and refusing to spend time discussing or separating the positions of others, and those thus uplifted will have the Lord's blessing. As a peculiar people they are separated from the world to stand as God's representatives holding the truth entrusted to them.

Gospel truths call God's people to stand distinct before the world, keeping them in harmony with heaven's laws, reforming character, preparing them for the holy city, and sustaining continual growth in Christian life. When they conform to the world their peculiar character cannot be seen and it becomes difficult to distinguish those who serve God from those who do not, so they are to come out and be separate under God's leading and then He can make them a praise in the earth. God calls people from spiritual darkness into marvelous light to serve as His instruments in carrying out His plans, and living faith equips them to bring others from darkness to light. Accepting the truth of God's word brings a person from darkness into the light of faith, hope and assurance, known in personal experience of finding help and satisfaction in Jesus, an experience that strengthens against unbelief. As separate and peculiar they represent the pure holy principles of their religion, and those rescued from degradation through Christ's work and faithful workers can become His chosen precious people called to restore His moral image in others and stand next to His throne.

God gives His people light not to keep but to share with those in the darkness of error, letting its rays shine to others including through missionary work circulating publications. Believers in present truth for the last days are His professed peculiar people called out in mercy as Israel was called from the Egyptians to worship without hindrance, a name requiring consecration, separation from worldly conformity, submission to God's will, and willingness to suffer on a rugged self-denying way. Worldly conformity, unwillingness to suffer, lack of submission, discouragement in trial and murmuring under God's proving deny that calling and repeat Israel's ungratefulness after miracles, deliverances and provings, only worse because truth now stands clear, plain and victorious. All professing to be God's chosen people, teachers or not, must preserve cleanliness and purity of body and keep houses and premises clean and orderly, for as examples to the world and living epistles known and read of all men they must rightly represent principles of truth, lift others high, be pure and holy, and abstain from all appearance of evil. Faithful watchful waiting for Christ's return shows their distinct holy character, but turning to earthly cares and possessions loses it until only profession distinguishes them from the world. As His peculiar chosen people their unity in truth carries powerful conviction to the world that they belong to God, and as Christ's true disciples belonging to the royal family they receive new hearts with grace perfecting character so they live in harmony and love as brothers.

God has separated His people from the world and chosen them as His special people to be witnesses declaring His power and saving work so that everywhere may know there is no God besides Him. As His peculiar people their faith should shape living, and extravagant finery and spending are not in keeping with that identity. Ancient Israel held the place of chosen peculiar people yet brought destruction on themselves by disregarding God's light and following their own ways, showing that being chosen does not shield from consequences of disobedience. Status as God's people excuses no worldly conduct, for they must maintain distinct holy character, avoid the world's spirit, and shun unwise actions that harm the church and bring the cause into disrepute. Those honored as sons and daughters of the royal family and accepted as co-workers raised to trust should value the honor with gratitude rather than dwell on weariness and complain. They belong to the royal family through the Holy Spirit who recreates, refines and sanctifies, fitting them as children of the Heavenly King by shining truth into the mind, convicting of sin, inspiring faith in the Saviour from sin, and turning affections from temporary things to the eternal inheritance.

Bringing souls out of darkness and error and establishing them on eternal truth tests one's calling through practical effort among those called out of darkness. Sabbath-keepers professing to be God's peculiar people should show distinctiveness in conduct by dressing neatly and modestly, keeping clean, and avoiding worldly fashions, with plainness and good works marking them different without carelessness or oddity, so appearance and example honor God and influence unbelievers toward truth. Those now professing to be God's peculiar treasure are responsible to obey requirements in His word, and if they obeyed special testimonies to awaken them to duty and danger would be unnecessary, for setting aside light blunts conscience and God may remove testimonies, deprive of strength, and humble. Required distinct peculiarity forbids craving popularity, imitating worldly customs and practices, reasoning as the world reasons, and copying its plans, so schools must keep religious teaching prominent even if unpopular and unbelievers leave, refusing to lower the standard for numbers or join enemies of truth in worldly entertainments that mislead youth, lest they incur God's frown, build on sand, prove false to trust, and meet results at God's bar. God calls believers out from the world to be witnesses and make truth known, and young men and women should be trained for useful influential service as missionaries. As living stones and instruments of righteousness His workers emit light as channels of truth and righteousness, and their conduct shows followers' unity and reflects obedience, justice, purity and holiness.

Warnings and Faithfulness

God's goodness is made known by personal testimony, and obedience to His demands is shown by actions rather than mere profession, with self-denial proved by denying appetite and giving up harmful indulgences into the treasury. The calling out of darkness into marvelous light is fulfilled by faithfully telling others by pen and voice that Jesus lives to make intercession for them. Those who serve God belong to His royal family as children of the heavenly King, and they are to show that identity through daily words and actions, for living as God's children matters more than learning, wisdom or high attainments, while conduct contradicting that identity is dishonest to His family and leads to separation from it. The church fails this holy and distinct calling when it blends with the world instead of standing out as peculiar and holy. That distinct denominational identity is expressed by keeping God's Sabbath and commandments and by carrying out gospel missionary work in preparation for the Lord's coming, so that even a sanitarium established for that work is denominational in purpose though serving patients of every class and denomination. Those called out of darkness are to let that light shine before others through good works so that people glorify the Father in heaven, for God has given such abundant light that they are rightly called the light of the world.

Distinctness comes through sound, essential truths, and faith, love and holiness give those truths their power, while unnecessary peculiarities can obscure them and weaken witness. That distinctness from the nations around is to be preserved in dress as well as belief, since even a small adoption of a fashion identified with the surrounding world can support it and weaken the ability to oppose it. God has chosen His people in love so they may praise Him, their salvation coming from Christ who gave Himself as an offering, and as they depend wholly on God rather than saving themselves or others, His tender mercy surrounds them and praising Him frustrates Satan's efforts to cover them with darkness. They make God's goodness known when their lives display the love of God and the power of the gospel by representing Christ, blessing others and living as Christ lived, with Christ formed in them as their hope of glory. They are a chosen people set apart for sacred, unselfish work. In answer to earnest prayer and through God's blessing they stand out as His chosen, precious and peculiar people, and their words and actions should set an example, bring conviction to unbelievers and let the light of truth shine in a dark world.

God's peculiar people are the commandment-keeping people, and though regarded as too insignificant to be worthy of notice they will be brought to notice by movements in the Christian world that suppress truth for human theories and false doctrines and plan to enslave the consciences of the loyal, with lawmaking powers set against them so that every soul will be tested and every position of faith searched. When darkness thickens to cover the earth and gross darkness the people, while the world pursues evil as righteousness, error as truth and sin as holiness, they must not be asleep nor silent as if paralyzed, but be wise for themselves as thorough Bible students established, strengthened and settled, and by precept and example impart that wisdom to their children. Coming out of darkness into light is also personal spiritual experience, as when one bound by perilous darkness emerges into light, or one bound by unbelief submits helplessly to the Saviour so Christ may deliver from that darkness. Those chosen and set apart are bound to holiness in body and spirit, including cleanliness in persons and surroundings, for God is present among His people and they must keep life and surroundings free from uncleanness, since careless neglect offends God, may lead Him to turn away and can leave them vulnerable to enemies. Their distinctness includes avoiding alliances with those who have not followed the light of truth, honoring God and keeping the Sabbath as the sign of the covenant between God and His people. Believers have a high, holy and elevated vocation to remain always distinct and peculiar and never come down from that position, and that distinct faith when appreciated keeps true believers from political strife, for their work is above the world's seeking for the spiritual recovery of mankind to God to bring them under His theocracy, and only in doing that work while kept in close sympathy with God with hearts bound up in love for Him are they a safe people, which is their only security against the dangers of the present time that each must individually be prepared to meet.

God has a chosen, precious people whose holy and distinctive standing is expressed in separation from the world and its contaminating influence. God's name in their foreheads marks Him as their Sovereign, and as separate and peculiar they keep free from politics. True faith in that high, holy, elevated calling keeps all true believers from entering political strife, and to come down from that position fails sacred responsibility and leaves souls to be consumed in the fires of the last day who might have been saved. As God's peculiar people they are set apart from worldly politics and must not be politicians or engage in political strife, for taking part in politics is wandering far from God, lacking wisdom from God and showing lack of true faith. As His chosen heritage set apart from the world and zealous for good works, their identity is shown by willing obedience to God's commandments and allegiance to Him, not by joining political causes or forming alliances with unbelievers.

Peculiarity is preserved by refusing to adopt the world's fashions and customs, and keeping this distinction honors God. God's people are His chosen, peculiar people and loyal, commandment-keeping subjects of His kingdom, zealous of good works, with God's signature marking them as His own and their calling to honor Him and carry His work forward. Keeping the seventh-day Sabbath identifies them as His peculiar people, for the Sabbath is God's sign of His covenant, His sanctifying power and His identity as Creator, and their observance preserves knowledge of the true God and sets them apart from those who serve Him not. They are separate from the world and refuse its stamp by choosing God's Thus saith the Lord over man's thus saith, shown by keeping the seventh day as the Sabbath of the Lord thy God instead of the first day of the week, which the Papal power, the man of sin, put in place of the seventh day and the Protestant world has received, cradled and honored as a holy day of rest. They are God's commandment-keeping chosen in whom He delights, bound to Him in a peculiar sense with exalted privileges by an everlasting covenant to live for Him and none else, separate and distinct with Jesus as their all and in all, while seeking after pleasure and strange vanities forfeits those privileges, leaving the cool snow waters of Lebanon to drink the turbid streams of the valleys. They keep His commandments without turning aside and show that heavenly truth has converted them.

When the church adopts the world's customs, selfishness and disobedience to God's law, the boundary becomes indistinct and the church is no longer a separate and peculiar people, and indulgence of appetite and extravagant spending for selfish pleasure dishonor God. They must stand forth as His own separate and distinct and not compromise with worldly principles nor present their work as indistinguishable from worldly institutions, because this obscures its sacred character and dishonors God, for truth and error cannot be partners and unity must not be built on conformity to worldly policy or union with popular churches. Separated by truth, they stand on the elevated platform of eternal truth without dulling the edge of the sword of truth, taking a straightforward course and using truth as a mighty cleaver to make that separation, giving the message in its purity and refusing to place good and evil on the same level, to extol men who did not choose to serve God, to extol idolatry, or to educate others along worldly lines by worldly articles and illustrations. Because the world lies in wickedness they are to come out and be separate, free from worldly customs, habits and sentiments, standing out distinct as the Lord's peculiar people earnest in all service with no fellowship with the works of darkness, in a much higher sense than many have realized. They are to stand as a distinct, holy people working in different lines from the world with earnest, solemn work in all their institutions, so that consulting lawyers in church matters dishonors God and violates separateness, showing loss of spiritual discernment, using common fire in place of sacred fire of God's own kindling, acting as destitute of God's Spirit and under Satan's control, placing too little dependence on God and too much on unsanctified men and leaving institutions unguarded. Standing on the holy ground of Bible truth keeps those who have faith in Christ as God's chosen from the lust of the flesh and from fellowship with the works of darkness, for they are to be holy and pure in heart and life and separate from those works.

God calls and chooses His people to be His own and to make His praise known by the way they live, to be sanctified and holy, communicate light to those around them and exemplify truth so their lives bring praise to God, a promise fulfilled as they believe and live out gospel principles and use God-given abilities in His service, needing the Spirit's grace, power and gifts for this work. Called out from the world by truth to stand as His distinct people, they must hold firmly to those truths and guard against deception. Set apart from the world, they are to live by heaven's principles and show a marked difference as God's own people. They are required to be distinct and peculiar, not seeking popularity by imitating the world's customs and practices, a principle applied to the College that it should give God's word its proper place and follow God's plan rather than worldly preferences. They are chosen and distinct, not left in darkness to copy worldly habits or depend on outward appearance for success, for their strength comes from God who gives power through His Spirit to influence others for good, and as His stewards they are to use entrusted talents in ways that magnify His name. Their distinctness as they follow His leading is expressed through self-denial and temperance, including healthful restraint of appetite, so they may yield their will to God and accomplish His purposes.

Those called out of darkness into marvelous light are to use the light and grace received in the highest service to God, showing forth His praises by lives that honor God and serve the Master. Instead of giving a false picture of God through complaint and example like the unfaithful steward, gratitude and faithful use of entrusted gifts should make life testify to God's goodness. Every person who bears Christ's name is called to show forth those praises. That showing is by living as witnesses for Christ, with faithful service, self-denial, gifts and home missionary work making faith visible and helping others escape the coming judgment, for being called into marvelous light means becoming a child of God, obeying His words, learning from Christ and teaching others what has been learned, continually receiving grace and imparting it to others. Those brought from darkness into wonderful light are to sing His praise when they meet Sabbath to Sabbath with no need of costly organ, for acceptable praise is the heart's adoration in humble, reverent, joyous songs from pure hearts filled with gratitude and thanksgiving, expressed in simple language with the love of Christ as the burden, ascending from family altar and pulpit and through the church as a thank-offering for the Bread of life, with heartfelt response to the words of life strengthening souls, encouraging the congregation and giving evidence of living stones that emit light, while songs from selfish hearts where pride reigns will not blend with angels' songs and humble songs from pure hearts call forth joy from angel choirs.

Royal Family Privilege

The call out of darkness into marvelous light is a thorough inward change when truth is enthroned in the heart, and those entrusted with sacred responsibilities must experience it or remain blind guides and ministers of darkness. It is a daily calling out of spiritual darkness to do the divine will, answered day by day with fresh grace and the endowment of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies the soul, fills the heart, enlightens the mind and gives strength to obey. Belonging to God is a sacred profession that must appear in real faith and convincing evidence in the life, not in much talking with little faith. The movement from darkness to light is turning from error to scriptural truth, for truth sanctifies the soul while error cannot purify or ennoble. Those called are to speak of Christ, contemplate His love, and let that light govern how they live.

Christians are to live in God's light and reveal His virtues in all things, with His word defining His way and truth planted in the heart enabling discernment of right from wrong so that those who cherish it refuse to be drawn into speculation. God's people are His peculiar people and should not be ashamed to be known as such, but let light shine by seeking wise opportunities to share Bible truths and enlighten others, for hiding identity fails the calling and being ashamed of Christ and His words brings His shame when He comes in glory. Being chosen involves understanding what the calling means and being united with Christ, with readiness to represent Christian deportment and health reform rightly and to set a good example. The church reaches its calling as chosen representatives when it repents, turns from evil, seeks God humbly, stands on eternal truth and takes hold by faith of what is prepared, and then it is healed, pure, free from earthly entanglements and precious in God's sight.

Peculiar distinctiveness is expressed through straightforward missionary work marked by self-denial, self-sacrifice, simplicity, meekness, lowliness and sanctified moral elevation, following Christ's example. That gospel missionary work is to shine brighter unto the perfect day, not taking the features of what is now called medical missionary work nor burying means and talents in the slums of New York or Chicago, but carried on in right lines with true missionary spirit as Christ worked. God calls out from the world a people to be as kings and priests to Him through Spirit-filled human instruments proclaiming saving truth to the ends of the earth, with human lips touched with holy fire preaching sanctifying truth while divine power convinces of sin, converts sinners and brings Christ's righteousness. At Pentecost this calling cut through unbelief like the sword of the Spirit newly edged with power and bathed in heaven's lightnings, overcoming satanic agencies, magnifying the Lord as possessing supreme power and gathering thousands in a day.

Those who have received light, when they appreciate and respect the testimonies given, are convicted and see the religious life in a new light, see the key unlocking mysteries never understood, lay hold of precious things to profit with, and are translated from the kingdom of darkness into marvelous light, with messages coming as a voice from heaven and light shining line upon line and precept upon precept. The Lord's professed people identified by the verse can nevertheless be led astray and bear false witness. God's peculiar people are those possessing the character traits named in the Beatitudes, chosen as subjects of His heavenly kingdom, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ with a place in His service, and those who suffer for His name will receive great reward in heaven. The church blessed with truth is formed by God for Himself to show forth His praise as His chosen representatives to an apostate world, entrusted with the greatest truths ever given and the most sacred solemn warning message to His appointed agencies.

That representation requires living as a distinct existence separate from idolatrous nations deep in apostasy and idolatry, presenting excellence of character and entire obedience and teaching the highest spirituality far above worldly policy and idolatry. Seventh-day Adventists are a peculiar people because they believe the Bible and make the Bible and the Bible only the foundation of faith, a standing openly declared rather than concealed and taught from Scripture so hearers learn its scriptural reasons. The Jewish nation was described as a royal nation, peculiar people and holy priesthood, yet despite that calling cried for Christ's blood and crucified Him. To be God's peculiar people means obedience proved by acts of self-denial and not cheap profession, requiring in probationary trial before the Lord of the universe placing soul and spirit on the Lord's side, giving up injurious indulgences, denying appetite and putting saved means into the treasury to carry on God's work.

God's chosen are called to make Him known, and as adopted children and Christ's representatives they reflect His image in daily words and actions, showing Christ to strangers by perfection of Christian walk. Peculiarity means set apart by important truths given by God, which youth should be helped to understand, with faithful labor producing precious enduring fruit. The people of God must maintain peculiar holy character in constant warfare, never shunning the cross under any condition, openly doing religious duties before unbelievers and especially relatives instead of being backward and silent, speaking of the wondrous change wrought by the Spirit and showing themselves loyal subjects of Prince Immanuel rather than sealing lips and acting like the enemy's subjects as though never naming Christ. Worshipers of God have distinctive holy character, yet some before the Flood were led into sin and lost it for lack of moral strength to resist corrupting influences.

God's chosen people are called to sacred unselfish work under His leadership. Preachers upholding God's truth are His chosen people, and small numbers, humble status or lack of worldly influence do not disprove it, for strength of numbers, learning or power is no proof of truth. Peculiarity does not mean oddities, eccentricities, sharp blunt speech, rough discourteous ways, coarse manners or self-made crosses to prove separation, but purity amid a crooked perverse nation, shining as lights, unrebukable without spot and blameless. It is separation from all approach to iniquity shown in truthfulness and strict honesty in dealing, patience under provocation, chaste holy thoughts bringing pure holy words from the heart's treasure, select well-chosen words with conversation in heaven, freedom from pride of opinion, not thinking too highly of self and esteeming others better, doing justly, loving mercy, walking humbly with God, pure holy kind courteous refined ennobled like Christ, with kindly ways without sacrificing principle.

God's peculiar people are made what they are by waymark truths proclaimed under the Spirit in the first, second and third angels' messages of warning, which those who passed over that experiential ground appreciate and rightly apply, while those without that experience do not appreciate them and mix truth with error into wrong theories and backward paths. Those who choose Christ and stand wholly on the Lord's side can reveal God's excellence. God is able and willing to lead all who will be led and make them members of His royal family by companionship with Himself, coming to all with priceless gifts, teaching constant trust, unwavering faith and unquestioning submission, calling each to walk with Him with the promise to fill the path with light. The noble consecrated distinctive calling should lead away from self-absorption and division toward encouraging faith, love and confidence in one another. The work established in Washington is to make His praise known and glorify His name.

Great light brings the duty of chosen heralds of salvation to communicate Bible truth to those around and speak eternal life to souls in darkness, a duty in which they have fallen far short. Christians as God's peculiar people must raise the standard instead of going backward, not yielding to children's world-loving propensities, not opening the door to amusements once prohibited on principle, not patronizing concerts, operas and theatres, and keeping simplicity of true godliness against contagious fashionable worldly religion that leavens the whole lump. Students are to be kept mindful that Christ is their Saviour and has called and chosen them, and those giving hearts to Him are members of His family to be prepared as workers for Him. Holiness and set-apartness recall Israel, given clear light, prophets and Christ to stand as peculiar people, yet rejecting light and choosing darkness, warning God's people to receive rather than resist truth.

Members of the royal family are in solemn covenant to promote piety in home and church, which forbids acting as if God's Word did not exist with self-love, selfish indulgence, temper, hasty speech, sensitive pride, natural inclination and perversities like the worldling, a course that closes soul windows, shuts out Christ's righteousness and forfeits joy, assurance and happiness because truth's leaven is not hidden in the heart. When life's waters flow in pure currents to the parched heart, fruit develops to God's glory and truth is no longer disreputed by defective hereditary and cultivated tendencies in word and action. The peculiar people whom the Lord purifies to be sanctified and holy keep the seventh-day Sabbath because commanded, obey through faith in Christ in return to loyalty, and their obedience assures them they are sons and daughters, members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. Christians now are God's chosen as Israel was in the wilderness, with Christ Himself as leader giving statutes and requirements for distinctness, bestowing heaven's bounties and expecting sharing with the less favored.

That sharing advances God's cause by Christian evangelizing rather than mere business, by prayerfully carefully handling means, avoiding foolish show, wearing neat modest apparel, and caring for soul and body through temporal food and unselfish benevolence so the needy receive spiritual food. God's distinct people stand for Him in a world opposed to right and truth by serving Him and refusing to trample His law, whose every requirement expresses His character, with blessing in keeping His commandments. Chosen and set apart from the world, they are to be fishers of men. Those remaining brave, true and firm in principle through Satan's temptations will be endorsed as chosen elect, a character developed through trials by grace. Sons and daughters in the royal family are to learn of Him daily to do His will and represent His character, with divine love received as active power quickening mind and soul, enlarging capacity for feeling and loving.

He who loves God supremely will love all God's children and approach them with respectful demeanor, and whatever his trust, considerate courtesy will win confidence and respect, so that where this spirit pervades institutions become heaven on earth and perpetual testimony of what sanctifying truth does when practiced, for every person desires such love and God calls each to reveal it to others. Parents are responsible to train children to become members of the royal family, bringing into the world no more than they can properly train, bringing God-fearing loving principles into their own life, perfecting Christian character as example, and from earliest years educating children to love and fear the Creator, obey all commandments and be missionaries. Belonging to the royal family means representing truth practically and being a light in a dark world, with lives showing they are God's people. Those preparing for holiness, purity and refinement will exercise temperance in all things, including leaving meat alone.

Becoming part of that family requires conversion, with self-confidence and rejection of instruction incompatible with the experience. Loving Jesus means obeying from the heart without treating obedience as hard, keeping on obeying whether the way is clear or not and leaving outcomes to God, whose holy law reflects His character. Obedience is shown through self-denial including giving up harmful indulgences and denying appetite. Those truly receiving the glorious gospel are members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King, showing in life the saving uplifting sanctifying power of truth bearing no resemblance to the earthly, and as partakers of the Son's flesh and blood daily gaining knowledge and experience, becoming more skilled workmen as they cooperate with Christ and make best use of talents.
