1 Peter 4:18

And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

Judgment begins with God's household and His people, and then comes upon those who disobey and obey not the gospel of God. Even the righteous are saved with difficulty, scarcely saved. That difficulty means they are saved only through severe trial, including trials and temptations.

The verse asks where the ungodly and the sinner will stand and appear when judgment comes. It shows they will have no secure place to stand and no place to appear, underscoring how alarming and serious their fate is. They will face vengeance and everlasting destruction when the Lord is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels.

Those who suffer according to God's will are to entrust and commit their souls to their faithful Creator while continuing to do good. The verse calls God's people to remain faithful through suffering. Every Christian must take part in the work and depend on God rather than human strength. Communion with God strengthens faith, and trials can become a triumph for those who hold fast to God's promises.

The verse applies to professed believers who have blood-bought privileges and light. It calls them to walk in the light as Christ is in the light, to represent Christ to the world, and to be doers of His words and not hearers only. In the hours of probation each person is deciding his own destiny, and in the day of final account each will be judged by the standard of what he ought to have been and what he ought to have done.

The chapter containing the verse is encouraging for those serving in the church. The chapter warns that people can err, cling dangerously to mistaken beliefs, and need to confess wrongs and turn from sin.
