1 Peter 4:19

Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Those who suffer according to God's will are to place the keeping of their souls in the hands of their faithful Creator and keep on doing what is right. The suffering meant is not suffering for wrongdoing, but fiery trial, reproach for Christ, and sharing in His sufferings, to be met not with shame or strangeness but with rejoicing in hope of exceeding joy when His glory is revealed. To commit the soul is to entrust it to God in living, active, intelligent faith with the simple trust of a child, resting in His care in quiet peace instead of turning inward in anxiety and fear or trying to bear everything in one's own strength. He is a faithful Creator who will keep what is entrusted to Him until the day of judgment, upholding, protecting, and sustaining those who rest in Him and giving grace sufficient for every need. Sinners can make this entrustment not because they are sinless, but because Christ purchased them with His blood and His righteousness is credited to them, so that through faith in His atoning sacrifice they have pardon, peace, and life.

Suffering According to Will

The suffering meant is suffering according to the will of God, not suffering for wrongdoing, coming amid fiery trial and reproach for Christ and sharing in Christ's sufferings. Such trial is not to be thought strange but to be met with rejoicing in hope of exceeding joy when His glory is revealed. Those who suffer as Christians are to feel no shame but to glorify God, guarding words, attitude and spirit under trial. In that suffering they are to rejoice, growing beyond babes in Christ into bold and firm soldiers of the cross who commit the keeping of their souls to God as the Rock of salvation and a present help in every time of need.

The verse belongs to the counsel to be sober and watch unto prayer because the end of all things is at hand, and to have fervent charity that covers sins. Committing the soul is joined with watching unto prayer, looking to Jesus and trusting in the Lord when the enemy seeks to spoil the life, with assurance that drawing nigh to Him brings His drawing nigh in return. It means following the convictions of the Spirit in harmony with brethren without crippling other lines of work, and moving forward in reasonable effort to extend the influence of the truth. In that setting it also means refusing evil speaking, being careful how to question and criticize fellow workers who walk in the light as Christ is in the light, and guarding the mind from being shaped and leavened by another person's feelings, impressions and imaginings.

Suffering according to God's will belongs to those gaining mastery over temptation and sin and growing up into Christ. Because the powers of darkness oppose their advance lest they become channels of light to the world, they meet conflict and trials. Close connection with Christ enables them to draw near to God and resist Satan's temptations while doing what is right. That committing is done by engaging all the powers of the being in the warfare, looking to the cross of Christ for grace and strength, and working the works of Christ through earnest and long-continued struggle until the mind gathers strength and firmness to resist the adversary and surely conquer.

Suffering for doing God's will has included being proscribed and outlawed by rulers for valiant defense of the faith, and thousands can be taught through faithful Christian teachers how to commit the keeping of the soul to Christ in such a stand. It can still require sacrifice and suffering, even leaving family and friends when they would hinder the work God requires, while continuing to do what is right in reliance on Him as faithful Creator. Love and devotion to God do not lessen love for family, and God can bless that love when family members support His service and unite in the work, at home or abroad.

Bearing trials for Jesus is not a mark of God's anger, but God's trials purify and advance His church. Faithful trust through affliction purifies character, so that those who hold fast come through trial as refined gold, with faith coming forth brighter, stronger and purer. That trust is learned by educating the mind to trust, talking faith and hope and God's goodness, seeing more reasons to trust and more of His love, and living in brightness rather than in the shadow Satan casts to press the soul into distrust. It rests on God loving and being good and kind and merciful, judging righteously, keeping His own and departed friends as His property, upholding and sustaining those who rest in Him, and receiving commitment with reverence and confidence in dark times.

The verse addresses all who suffer in God's will and service, in trouble and danger, reproach and temptation, calamity, sickness, and an unknown and uncertain future. It calls them to entrust the care of their souls to God by continuing to do good and to do what is right, trusting Him as a faithful Creator who will keep what is committed to His trust. Jesus is present with them in trouble and danger, holding them in His sheltering arms so they have nothing to fear, filling the heart with great peace and light even while trouble lasts, with confidence to finish the work God has given them to do. This entrusting means resting in His care and leaving room for Him to work instead of resisting His way through complaints or attempts to control everything, relying on Jesus for help even when weakness, fear or temptation makes faithful service seem impossible, thanking God for favorable results and relief, and moving forward in faith rather than yielding to discouragement unto victory in humble faith that gives courage to conquer.

Entrusting the Soul

To commit the keeping of the soul is to entrust the soul to God in living, active, intelligent faith and to rest in His care rather than turning inward in anxiety and fear about salvation. The soul may be placed in His hands with perfect assurance, finding quietness and peace and calm, an undisturbed rest, because the soul belongs to Him and He will keep what is entrusted to Him until the day of judgment. His promises to such a soul will not fail and have no limit but faith, keeping the soul focused on Christ its source of strength and life. This committing refuses trust in self, puts away every deviation from right and every sin and character defect by genuine repentance instead of merely confessing sin, trusts in the might of Jesus who has spoiled the powers of darkness, and walks carefully before others. For every trusting, believing soul Jesus lifts up a standard against Satan, gives grace sufficient for every need, and permits no temptation above what can be borne, while trust leaves room for God to work instead of resisting His way through complaints or attempts to control everything.

Entrusting the soul turns from confidence in self and refuses to try to bear everything in one's own strength or to carry every burden alone. It means depending on God rather than on another person, committing every concern to Him in prayer, seeking His counsel at every step, and relying on the Saviour to lead step by step. It stops walking in finite human strength and trusts in the living God, bringing light and hope and comfort, for God will keep what is committed to His care against that day. Those serving God, and ministers in particular, are to be hopeful and trustful, commit their souls to Jesus and represent Him in character rather than carrying the burden of the work as if it rested on them alone. Such commitment honors God, hopes in His mercy, believes, and trusts to see His salvation, learning through trials and weighty responsibilities a dependence that leads to peace and rest in Jesus.

This commitment is made with the full and simple trust of a child in its parents, without wavering, doubting, or looking to self. It means opening the heart to God, looking to Jesus with abiding faith, taking hold of His strength, living by faith rather than glorifying self, and living bound to Christ in heart, purpose, and will. Doing the Master's will wholeheartedly in this trust brings peace, without claiming to be holy or sinless, walking in simplicity and godliness, seeking the Lord, filling the very place He has appointed, doing one's very best with watchfulness and prayer, dismissing anxieties and worries, and bringing burdens to Him for rest. It relies wholly upon Jesus and not upon what has been done or may be done, resting in Jesus as best Friend and helper, holding fast the promises with assurance that God will not withhold any good thing. Looking to Jesus in this simple act of faith in Christ's love brings peace and rest and changes the believer into His image, and those who so commit the keeping of their souls to Him as a faithful Creator are enabled by Him to do the work He has given them, for He works for them and works out their salvation for them, a fact proved by experience.

The commitment covers both soul and body, especially when strength fails and sickness, pain, weakness, infirmity, or suffering cloud the mind and leave a person helpless and unable to be active. Then the sufferer can rest rather than strain to think, placing soul and body in God's hands and relying wholly on Him by faith. Faith and hope nourished by God's promises enable even the helpless to entrust the soul to God as a faithful Creator, trusting that He who died for them will do all things well. This trust brings freedom from despondency and doubt, meets suffering and weakness with trust in God's love and faithfulness to His promises, and rests in confidence that He will care for those who love, trust, and serve Him and will not abandon them or leave them to Satan's power.

It is safe to entrust the soul to God because He rules and reigns over heaven and earth. His infinite wisdom and power are exerted in behalf of believers, and the heavenly host fight their battles for them, looking with intense interest upon souls purchased by the Saviour's blood and seeing through Christ's sacrifice the value of the human soul. This safety belongs to those wholly and not half-heartedly on the Lord's side, giving up half-hearted, indifferent, careless work that separates the soul from Jesus the source of strength, and praying to lose property, worldly honor, and everything rather than lose His presence.

Entrusting the soul to God honors Him and gives Him room to work in His own way. It means hoping in His mercy, letting His revealed will be done, waiting patiently for Him in trust that He has not forsaken the sufferer, and refusing to resist His way through complaints, tears, worry, attempts to control everything, cherished idols, or fear of what may come. Covering His altar with tears and complaints displeases Him and blocks His way, while praising God, believing, resting in faith and simple trust, cultivating restfulness, letting the peace of God rule in the heart with thankfulness, and going forward in trust lets the good work go on, for He lives and knows what is best and will work for the good of believers and will keep and guard what is committed to His care. It also forbids taking upon oneself burdens God has not required and carrying them alone when they should be shared with fellow workers, since human strength cannot endure so great a strain, and heeding the counsel and warnings God sends saves from a worn, exhausted condition.

Continuing in Well Doing

Those who suffer according to God's will are to entrust their souls to God as a faithful Creator while continuing to do good and to do what is right, with courage, perseverance, and complete reliance on Him. As they do so, light shines on their path and grows brighter toward the perfect day, and eternal life is seen as worth lifelong effort, with humble faith giving courage to conquer. This trust is safe even when human help is absent and spiritual conflict presses, for Jesus lives to plead for His people and will not leave those who entrust themselves to Him. Such commitment supports cheerful, hopeful, faithful labor that represents Jesus in character.

A profession of Christ is denied when life shows selfishness, complaining, frivolous talk, or greater love for worldly amusements than for God. Entire obedience brings the heart into harmony with heaven, where benevolence and brotherly love are active. Knowingly breaking one of God's commandments for convenience is incompatible with entrusting the soul to Him, and those who strive to overcome and yield the will to God may claim His promises and trust His loving-kindness. This trust is shown in humility, penitence, desire to become like Jesus, and fear of disobeying or disregarding His commands, honoring God who restores and heals the contrite and humble. It is shown also by living out the baptismal pledge to be separate from the world and its teachings and practices, presenting oneself to God in faithful obedience and following Him as He leads and guides those who submit.

Faithful conduct under trial includes guarding words, attitude, and spirit, watching words and actions so as to give no occasion to others and plant no objectionable seed in any mind. It means keeping the tongue as with a bridle, speaking only encouraging words, making the best of everything, and carefully representing the spirit of Christ. When others speak or act against them, sufferers are not to retaliate in anger but to repeat Scripture and possess their souls in patience, keeping the soul in the love of God. Handing the soul over to God is for Him to take charge, draw close to Himself, and educate and train, drawing strength, grace, beauty of character, and rest from Christ. When defects are seen they are to be turned into personal instruction not to do the same, which makes the path easier.

This trust belongs with unreserved surrender to Christ and a guarded spirit and speech, with prayer and watching, avoiding careless words and hasty decisions, and continually drawing near to God for help. It calls for watching and praying lest one enter into temptation, seeking the Lord for sympathy and cooperation to obtain intelligence and peace. This guardedness is needed because Satan has come down in great power knowing he has but a short time to work, and is working with all deceivableness of unrighteousness to draw men away from Christ. It is safe to trust Jesus rather than people, even with the innermost workings of the mind, relying on Him as Counselor purchased at infinite cost.

Committing oneself to God goes with willing to do His will and working with Him in the saving of the soul, not neglecting one's own part or practical responsibilities but faithfully doing daily duties. It means to pray, believe, work, and use the natural remedies and health-giving means God has provided, receiving results wrought according to His will with thanks as blessings from Him. Trusting God does not mean neglecting practical care in sickness and suffering, but praying for His blessing, patience, and recovery while using beneficial treatments in harmony with natural laws and committing both soul and body to Him. This trust is lived out by resisting hurtful indulgences and deceptions and temptations through earnest prayer, and by using entrusted money wisely as a faithful steward so that it serves God's purposes and benefits others, with practical giving to the needy strengthening faith to commit soul and body to God.

Well-doing means consecrating all the powers of mind and body to do His will and not to serve self, walking humbly with God and working earnestly for the truth. It is accepting Christ's invitation and taking His yoke, yielding the will to God, following His Word rather than human control or trying to direct the Holy Spirit, and welcoming Jesus into the heart to work through the believer, which brings rest to the soul. It means following Christ in humble, practical obedience and trusting Him to keep, rather than walking alone where obstacles seem insurmountable. Those who so trust keep their souls in sunshine and not in shadow, talk light and not darkness, keep the mind refreshed by speaking of His goodness, love and power, and show cheerful faith and courage with true Christlike dignity and holy solemnity, free from impurity in thought or word or act and free from lightness, trifling, frivolity, cheap conversation, jesting and joking that weaken the soul and wean the heart from prayer.

God works through those who entrust themselves to Him in faith, self-denial, and self-sacrifice, opening ways for them to serve. Those who serve are to be cheerful, hopeful, and trustful, casting cares on Jesus rather than carrying the whole burden of the work as if it rested on them alone, and representing Him in character. This is carrying the saving gospel message into neglected fields, heeding Christ's peace so the heart is not troubled or afraid over lack of means, talent and influence, but trusting God to provide means and trustworthy helpers with the true missionary spirit. It is working and praying and waiting in well-doing with assurance of seeing the salvation of God. Such entrusting is a deliberate act, even early in the morning when sleep fails and in brain weariness and recovery from illness, joined with gratitude for restoration and with perseverance in faithful labor and doing good for others.

God the Faithful Keeper

God is the faithful Creator to whom the keeping of the soul is committed in suffering according to His will, while continuing to do what is right, for the soul belongs to Him and He will keep what is entrusted to His trust until the day of judgment, against that day. His promises to such a soul will not fail, and they have no limit but faith, so that living, active faith that refuses trust in self may claim them and be sustained even in the fiercest suffering until the final reward. This committing means putting away every deviation from right and every sin and character defect by genuine repentance rather than mere confession, refusing to waver or look to self in doubt, relying wholly upon Jesus and not upon what has been done or may be done, and trusting in His might who has spoiled the powers of darkness.

He is a refuge in trouble and trial and a present help in every time of need, caring for those who entrust themselves to Him amid an unknown and uncertain future. He upholds and sustains those who rest in Him, protects them from Satan's devices, shelters them from temptation, and keeps close connection with them so they can draw near to God and resist Satan. For every trusting, believing soul Jesus lifts up a standard against Satan, gives grace sufficient for every need, and permits no temptation above what can be borne. Even when tempted to think or speak unwisely, or when physically and spiritually afflicted, the believer who commits the soul to Him will be preserved and sanctified and blessed, finding rest in Jesus through confidence that the unseen Christ walks with him, listens with hope, heals body and soul, and leads onward and upward to certain victory. Jesus is present in trouble and danger, holding sufferers in His sheltering arms so they have nothing to fear, filling the heart with great peace and light even while trouble lasts, with confidence to finish the appointed work.

Committing the soul to Him brings quietness, rest, peace, calmness, light, hope, comfort, joy, strength, freedom in Christ, courage, and a hundredfold more faith. It is resting in His love instead of struggling, trusting in One who gave His life to make free, grasping by living faith the hand of infinite power that is able to keep from falling, with all the resources of heaven placed at demand so that blessing may be claimed and needed things asked for. That trust makes a cheerful and happy life in the Lord without being light and trifling, determined that the enemy shall have no victory because Christ has promised, and it gives strength for His work and power to build character for time and eternity, leading those who hope and pray and believe and hold fast into light. The overworked, over-worried, greatly tempted worker who so commits the soul finds rest and peace with a soothing influence from Jesus, becoming a blessing and an imitator of Jesus.

The faithful Creator comforts and blesses sufferers who lay aside all doubts and rest peacefully and trustingly in His love, keeping hidden their life with Christ in God, holding their names in the Lamb's book of life, and keeping what is committed to Him against that day until Christ who is their life appears and they see Him as He is and are made like Him. Committing the soul includes being clothed in the robe of Christ's righteousness woven in heaven that never grows old or decays, the unfading wedding garment that fits the place and secures admittance to the palace of the King of heaven.

He loves His most helpless and suffering children, and His angels are near them. His power carries out what His wisdom and love desire, and His care extends even to the most helpless and suffering, who can trust Him while remembering Jesus who suffered to save humanity. He is pitiful and full of tender sympathy, letting His light shine about the sufferer to bless and strengthen and support, so that the blessed hope grows stronger and stronger as trials and afflictions increase. He remembers faithful labors of love done when few in number and under assault, with the special help given to hold the fort, and He will not leave such workers but calls them to commit their souls to Him, looking to Him in faith as the great Physician who hears prayer because He has promised, being of good courage, preserving health and strength rather than taking on more than should be done, so life is not shortened and influence continues as a blessing. Committing the soul with the full confidence of a child in its parents, resting in Jesus as best Friend and helper, removes distrust, doubt and misgivings, holds fast the promises with assurance that no good thing will be withheld, and gives implicit trust for grace to bear every trial and strength to endure every temptation, so that trial becomes triumph, because He who has all things and sees all things present and future prepares the trusting soul to meet every temptation, giving the privilege of taking hold of Jesus' hand and asking in faith for guidance without contending with His providence. When infirmity or suffering leaves a person unable to be active, duty is to trust Him, for His mercies are sure and His covenant everlasting, He is compassionate toward sufferers, gracious and ready to pardon, knowing human weakness and remembering that people are dust, healing backsliding and freely loving sinners and shining on them for Christ's sake, and He knows what is best even when the purpose of affliction cannot be understood, bringing the sufferer near to Him and sustaining faith, patience and peace through trial.

Those who commit their souls to Him as a faithful Creator in childlike trust, walking in simplicity and godliness, seeking the Lord and filling the very place He has appointed, are enabled by Him to do the work He has given them to do, for He works for them and works out their salvation for them, a fact proved by experience. Daniel shows this trust in practice by seeking God in prayer, recognizing God as the source of wisdom, and faithfully giving Him honor rather than claiming it for himself, with perfect assurance that souls may be entrusted to the faithful Creator. Practical giving to those in need strengthens faith and leads believers to commit soul and body to God.

Trust Grounded in Christ

Sinners may entrust the keeping of the soul to God as a faithful Creator not because they are sinless or deserve His care but because Jesus died to save the erring and His righteousness is credited to them. This trust turns away from confidence in self to look in faith to the sinless Lamb of God and become like Him, relying wholly upon Jesus rather than upon what has been done or may be done, without wavering, without looking to self, and without doubting. Through faith in the atoning sacrifice the sinner has life, pardon, and the peace of Jesus Christ, and may claim this rich endowment and lay hold of the assurances of the word because Christ bore the punishment of sin. Through His virtue and His imputed righteousness His purchased possession stands pure and undefiled before the Father, the undeserving made perfect through His merits while He, though undeserving, was made sin and bore sins in His own body on the tree, so that the undeserving may go free and receive the rich treasures of His grace. God has promised He will keep what is committed to His trust against that day.

Taking Jesus as a personal Saviour by faith is itself committing the keeping of the soul to Him, since Jesus has borne the sins of the world so believers are not compelled to bear them themselves. A repentant, believing sinner entrusts the soul to God in surrender to God and faith in Christ, with Christ's righteousness joined to the sinner's confession and His atoning blood alone cleansing from sin. Through faith in Christ the sinner is justified, freed from bondage and condemnation, and enabled to obey God's commandments.

The soul belongs to God through Christ because He purchased it with His blood, so believers are not their own and He can keep what is entrusted to Him until that day. This purchase was at infinite cost, making it safe to trust Jesus with even the innermost workings of the mind and to rely on Him as Counselor rather than trusting people. That trust is expressed as committing oneself to Christ, praying and watching, avoiding careless words and hasty decisions, and keeping drawing near to God for help.

Believers can entrust the keeping of their souls to Jesus because He lives, pleads for them, and will not leave them when they rely on Him, and this trust is joined with persevering in well-doing and looking to Jesus as the eternal reward. The One trusted gave His precious life in a cruel, shameful death to redeem every soul who will receive Him and will be a helper to all who trust in Him. He is the Word who was with God and was God, by whom all things were made and in whom was life and light, made flesh full of grace and truth, made perfect through sufferings and tempted as His brethren that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest able to succor the tempted. Clothed with humanity as a suffering, tempted man beset by Satan and tempted in all points like His people yet without tarnish or blur, He thinks of those subject to temptation individually and knows every necessity, cares and loves and died, remains with His people even to the end, and is now at the right hand of God as Advocate making intercession for the tried and tempted. Therefore those facing trials and temptation can give themselves fully and unreservedly to Him instead of mourning over self as if to be their own saviour or dwelling in despair, opening the heart to Christ, allowing no doubt or unbelief in word or breath, grasping rich blessings by faith, talking courage and strength and faith with courage and strength and faith, and bearing a living testimony for God under all circumstances.

Entrusting the soul to God as a faithful Creator means seeking the Lord, repenting, and turning from the error of the way to seek the righteousness of Christ and be saved. Such a soul causes rejoicing in heaven among the angels of God and makes Christ rejoice, because the soul for whom He died is not lost and He has not died in vain. He gave His life to redeem the soul from the power of Satan and from eternal ruin, and He wants the saved one to be happy, to have a home with Him in His kingdom, a crown of glory, and a treasure in the heavens that fails not. A person facing suffering and death can commit the soul to God with confidence in Jesus' saving love, resting in hope that Jesus the Life Giver will return in glory and call His faithful believers from death to glorious immortality and to the eternal home of His loved ones. The soul is committed to God when a person accepts Christ's invitation and takes His yoke and yields the will to God, for Christ's service brings rest to the soul, and God as a faithful Creator understands human weakness and needs. This trust includes confidence in Christ's atonement and patient hope for the Saviour's return, with the call to commit oneself to Christ who is willing and able to save, His death showing His willingness and His resurrection and ascension showing His power, following God's Word rather than submitting to human control.

Committing the soul to God as a faithful Creator is done with a trusting heart and brings peace, quietude, and abiding peace, by looking to Christ, choosing Him as all in all, and trying to act as He would, following His way which forms meekness and lowliness. It means being a whole-hearted, decided Christian in all things and being persevering, not trusting in self alone as able to perfect Christian character, for that will certainly fail. It is privilege and duty to grasp and improve as a blessing every gracious opportunity and every possible means for improving the mind and strengthening the soul, while looking alone to Jesus as the true Source of all power to mold character after the divine Pattern, as Author and Finisher of faith, catching the divine rays of light from heaven, daily pressing forward toward the mark for the prize, believing that what grace has begun, glory shall crown in the kingdom of God. Through His power believers can overcome evil tendencies and bring their dispositions into harmony with God's will rather than facing obstacles alone. This saving faith joins the believer to Christ so that the believer lives in truth and displays patience, courtesy, goodness, purity, and sanctification, living a life bound to Christ in heart, purpose, and will with earnest effort to grow in character by prayer, faith, and obedience to Scripture. Failure is no reason for discouragement, for the soul can seek forgiveness and try again, looking to Jesus and becoming more like Him, living and walking by faith rather than trusting in or glorifying self. God keeps the soul as the Holy Spirit takes the heart into His care and works in the contrite person, while self-importance and self-righteousness obstruct that work, and this dependence on God's keeping power leads to obedience to His commandments.

Living by Trust Daily

In burdens and responsibilities in God's work the soul is to be entrusted to the faithful Creator while continuing to do what is right, not carrying the whole burden alone but casting cares on Jesus and remaining cheerful, hopeful and trustful. Those serving God are to accept the responsibilities He assigns rather than overtaxing themselves or risking life on duties only supposed to be theirs. Taking upon oneself unrequired burdens and carrying them alone when they should be shared with fellow workers and fellow ministers wears and exhausts human strength, while heeding God's counsel and warnings saves from that worn condition. Committing one's keeping to God does not neglect one's own part, but prays, believes, works, and uses the natural remedies and health-giving means He provides, whose results are truly His work and are to be received with thanks as blessings from Him, whether relief or favorable results in labor.

For Christian teachers this committing means making the Lord their strength and efficiency through personal knowledge of Christ. It is done by direct, confident prayer to Christ rather than going to a neighbor or writing for human advice, and this honors God far more than depending on people.

Overworked, tempted workers, including physicians pressed beyond measure, over-worried and greatly tempted, and ministers, find rest and peace by opening the heart to God and entrusting the soul to Him, with a soothing influence coming from Jesus. This trust is joined with a gentle, loving spirit and with living, active, intelligent faith in well-doing, refusing unbelief, gloom, and talk of the dark side. Then the life shines as a bright light, the worker becomes a great blessing and imitator of Jesus with a cure for souls, takes a firm stand as a laborer together with God, and has more faith, courage and hope for the work God has to be done.

In home life, health and family care the ordering of life is left in God's hands while daily duties are faithfully done, willing to do His will and working with Him in saving the soul without neglecting practical responsibilities. In illness soul and body are trusted to God rather than making human help the ultimate confidence, praying to Him in faith without doubt, looking to Christ for strength, and seeking His help for health and family for present and eternal good. God loves and remembers faithful laborers who held the fort when few and assaulted, giving special help, and He will not leave them but would have them look to Him as the great Physician who hears prayer because He promised, be of good courage, preserve health and strength rather than take on too much work, and continue a blessing influence. Service may still require sacrifice and suffering, even leaving family and friends when they hinder required work, entrusting everything to God in well-doing, while love for family continues and God blesses united service at home or abroad.

Committing the soul means trusting the Creator's care while waiting and hoping for the Saviour's coming and the eternal home of His people. In trial, distress, affliction and facing judgment now is the time to rest in His love instead of struggling, in unreserved surrender to Christ with guarded spirit and speech, relying on Christ as helper and doing work faithfully. The Redeemer is pitiful and full of tender sympathy, letting His light shine about the sufferer to bless, strengthen and support, so the blessed hope grows stronger as trials increase. One facing suffering and death can trust with confidence in Jesus' saving love, believing the Life-Giver will return in glory to call the faithful from death to glorious immortality, and God who is faithful preserves what is entrusted through affliction until the day of final reward, sustaining even in fiercest suffering.

Daily trust is deliberate, even early in the morning in sleeplessness and weariness, with gratitude, watching and praying lest one enter temptation, consecrating self to God through trials and darkness, and guarding speech. Those tried and tempted are not to mourn as though they must save themselves but to give self to God without reserve, open the heart to Christ, allow no doubt or unbelief in word or breath, grasp rich blessings by faith, and talk courage, strength and faith. It means seeking the Lord, repenting and turning from error to Christ's righteousness to be saved, believing forgiveness and resting in love, which makes heaven and Christ rejoice that the soul He died to redeem from Satan and eternal ruin is not lost but has a home, crown and unfailing treasure. Remembering how the Lord has helped hitherto gives courage amid new trials, perplexities, privations and bereavements without dismay, trusting He will keep what is committed against that day and give strength as days require, pleading for strength, clearness and grace to honor Him in dependence and love.

Under opposition, disappointment and Satan's suggestions this trust talks faith, hope and God's goodness rather than darkness, looking to Jesus and drawing near with assurance He will draw near in return. It refuses evil speaking, careful questioning and criticism of fellow workers who walk in the light, guards the mind from being shaped by another's feelings and imaginings, and instead of retaliating in anger when others speak or act against repeats Scripture and possesses the soul in patience. Horrifying temptations, even suggestions that Christ was only a man, are treated as wholly from Satan, never admitted as one's own, with vain thoughts hated, courage rising with temptation, and confidence that Christ understands and accepts the tempted. The tempted one believes unseen Christ walks with him, listens with confidence and hope, finds rest in Jesus unto healing of body and soul and onward victory, prays earnestly for protection from deceptions, resists hurtful indulgences, and uses entrusted money wisely as a faithful steward.

Such faith belongs to a new, higher experience that prizes heavenly things above earthly attractions, learns how to pray and how to bear a clear, intelligent, living testimony under all circumstances, and glorifies God. It gives sweet assurance of His love with comfort in Christ ever present to the end, rest that encourages others to have faith in God, and joy and comfort through life.
