1 Peter 4:3

For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

The time already spent working the will of the Gentiles is to suffice for the past, and that past folly is to be abandoned and left behind. That former Gentile course was walking in unrestrained sensuality and lasciviousness, evil cravings and lusts, drunkenness and excess of wine, revelry and revellings, feasting and banquetings, and detestable, abominable idolatries. In contrast, the rest of the time in the flesh is no longer to be lived to the lusts of men and for human desires and self, but for God and to do the will of God according to His will.

This break with the past is what is demanded by God giving His only begotten Son to come as a child, to live as every human being lives, to suffer abuse and rejection and crucifixion, and through a sinless life and atoning death to make it possible for humanity to lay hold on divinity. It takes place by arming with the same mind as Christ who suffered in the flesh, which means having ceased from sin. In practice this means daily overcoming the temptations that are in the world through lust, thereby becoming partakers of the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world through lust, and securing the eternal reward.

The former sinful life is the thorns and noxious weeds that choke the gospel seed and kill out the wheat, so that without moral transformation grace cannot thrive and the crop is stunted. Old habits and practices must therefore be left behind, the attributes of Satan expelled from the soul temple, the heart kept under the control of God, and objectionable natural traits of character overcome. Those who make this change will be thought strange by former companions who still run with them to the same excess of riot and reckless living, and will be spoken evil of for not joining them. Because the end of all things is at hand, believers must instead be sober and watch unto prayer. Those who oppose and speak evil will have to give account to Him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.
