1 Samuel 1:13
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
Hannah prayed silently from her heart, with only her lips moving and no sound heard. She prayed in deep anguish, with strong emotion visible on her face. Eli watched her and mistook her for a woman overcome with wine, taking her silent agitation for intoxication. His mistake happened where irreverence prevailed and drunkenness at religious festivals was common and not uncommon.
Eli misjudged her and rebuked her unjustly for supposed drunkenness. The verse sets faithful and self-denying Hannah in contrast with Eli's indulgence and neglect as father and priest.
Hannah's patient, prayerful, and persevering fidelity is an example of the faithfulness needed in the church, the Sabbath school, and society.
