Hannah Weeps in Prayer as Eli Watchesby sanjalberts

1 Samuel 1:15

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

Eli mistook Hannah's earnest prayer for drunkenness and wrongly accused and reproved her. She answered that she had drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but that her distressed appearance came from deep sorrow and grief. To pour out her soul before the Lord is to bring grief and plea openly to God in prayer. Though she prayed silently and wept, her earnest appeal was genuine worship.

She answered calmly and reverently without indignation at unjust blame, showing reverence for God's anointed, and having prayed she was at peace. Her faithfulness, firmness, and self-denial stand in contrast to Eli's indulgence and neglect.

She is an example of patient, prayerful, and persevering faithfulness to God.
