1 Samuel 1:18
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad. And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
Hannah's deep grief came from her childlessness and from Penninah's repeated taunts. At the family feast she wept and would not eat, despite Elkanah's efforts to comfort her. This sorrow forms the setting for her prayer at Shiloh and Eli's blessing, which come before the eating and changed countenance in verse 18.
In this account Hannah stands as a faithful servant of God. Her course is an example of patient, prayerful, and persevering fidelity. Her faithfulness stands in contrast to Eli's indulgence and failure to restrain his sons.
