1 Samuel 1:7
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
Year by year Elkanah's family went up to Shiloh, to the house of the Lord, for worship and sacrifice at the appointed gatherings. The yearly visits became occasions when Hannah went with her family to worship and the family feast turned painful for her.
Elkanah gave Hannah a double portion as a sign of his regard for her, and this stirred Peninnah's jealousy. Peninnah treated Hannah with proud contempt, repeatedly taunting her for having no children. She held up Hannah's childlessness as evidence of the Lord's displeasure toward Hannah and of His favor toward herself instead. The repeated provocation distressed Hannah so greatly that she wept and did not eat, leaving the feast without eating.
