1 Samuel 10:12
And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets? And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
The surrounding account provides evidence that Israel possessed a school of the prophets where workers were trained. When the Spirit of God came and rested upon Saul, he joined the prophets in praising God and prophesying among them. He had previously been known as an untrained farmer, yet among the prophets he spoke with unusual fluency and wisdom.
Those who knew him were astonished at his unexpected participation, and their question whether Saul also was among the prophets became a proverb expressing amazement. The transformation strikingly shows how the Spirit changed Saul and equipped him for his new responsibility as king. The same influence is seen animating gathered praise, since even when Saul arrived with a restless, envious, jealous spirit because of David, he joined in singing praise and prompted the proverbial question.
Saul's later experience at Ramah repeated the earlier event, for despite his murderous intent against David the Spirit of God overcame him and he prophesied. By that repetition the proverb became known again near the close of his reign.
