1 Samuel 10:16
And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not. And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
The book that contains this verse records the history of Israel from Eli to the old age of David, and it is properly the last book of Judges and is one book with 2 Samuel in Hebrew, written by Samuel himself or by the school of the prophets he founded. The verse belongs at the beginning of Saul's reign to the account of his choosing as king and the various events connected with it. That account of the choosing of Saul as king stands within the history covering Saul's choosing, Samuel's death, the waning of Saul's house, and David's calling.
The anointing of Saul as king recorded in the chapter is dated B.C. 1095 and marks the end of the 450 years during which the judges ruled spoken of in Acts 13:19-21. Those 450 years began with the division of the land of Canaan completed in B.C. 1444. Since 1095 subtracted from 1444 leaves only 349 years instead of 450, the received chronology is corrected by about a century, placing time that much farther this side of Creation and showing earth's 6,000 years are well-nigh run.
In the verse Saul answers his uncle by reporting plainly that the lost asses had been found, but he says nothing about the matter of the kingdom of which Samuel had spoken. His silence about his promotion shows humility as an effect of the change of heart God had given him, in that rather than hastening to announce himself he remained small in his own eyes. The surrounding account of Saul proves conversion is taught as plainly in the Old Testament as in the New. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, he was turned into another man, and when he turned to go from Samuel God gave him another heart. This means he was converted and born again with no element lacking by the word and Spirit of God, so that a teacher in Israel should have known and understood the change of heart from the Scriptures.
