1 Samuel 10:22

Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.

Saul had been chosen by lot as Israel's king, yet he was absent and not with the assembled people when they sought to bring him forward. After further inquiry of the Lord whether the man would yet come there, the Lord revealed that he had hid himself among the baggage, the stuff meaning the baggage. His hiding was a withdrawal under the burden of the grave responsibility that was about to fall on him. In the surrounding account many acknowledged him, but some Israelites refused allegiance to the man God had appointed because of tribal rivalry, envy, and disappointed ambition.
