Tall Saul Before the Crowd With Textby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 10:23

And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

This moment belongs to the larger account of Israel demanding a king, a demand born from dissatisfaction with the judges and from a desire to be ruled like the other nations. After Saul was designated as king by lot, he was fetched and brought before the assembled people. He was God's chosen man, yet many Israelites were opposed to accepting him, because his selection from Benjamin, the smallest tribe, displeased those who favored Judah or Ephraim and those who wanted the throne for themselves.

When he stood among the people he was higher than any of them from his shoulders upward, exceptional in height. That stature gave him a noble, kingly bearing that made him seem kingly to the people. His appearance caused the people to regard him with pride and satisfaction. Samuel presented him as the Lord's chosen one, and the people answered with a joyful shout.
