1 Samuel 12:11
And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe. And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
This reminder was given in Samuel's farewell address at Gilgal, reviewing God's past dealings with Israel. The men the Lord sent are named as Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel himself, judges raised up to deliver. When Israel turned from its evil ways, God in mercy raised up these deliverers. Through them He rescued the people from their enemies on every side so they could dwell in safety, going before them and fighting their battles for them.
These rescues were the Lord's own acts, for He was already Israel's King. They gave no ground for rejecting His rule, and in demanding a human king Israel wrongly treated human rule as the protection it needed.
