1 Samuel 12:5
And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness. And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
Samuel set both the Lord and the king he had anointed as witnesses over himself in a public examination of his administration. The question put before them was whether he had taken anything at all from the people during his rule. The people answered together that he had taken nothing, confirming that no such taking could be found in his possession. That mutual testimony established his open accountability before God and the nation and displayed his integrity as a ruler who had kept his hands clean.
