1 Samuel 12:8

When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

Samuel gave this summary at Gilgal as part of his public address tracing the nation's history down to the land where Israel was then standing. It looks back to the time when Jacob went down into Egypt and, after his descendants there cried out to the Lord, the Lord answered by sending Moses and Aaron. Through them He brought their fathers out of Egypt and caused them to dwell in this place, settling them in the land. Samuel rehearsed that deliverance to set before the people that God Himself had been their deliverer and ruler, even though they had repeatedly turned away from Him.
