Saul and Jonathan Stand Under a Pomegranate Treeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 13:15

And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

Saul's force with him had dwindled to about six hundred men. He left Gilgal and withdrew to Geba. Geba was a recently captured fortress north of Jerusalem. It was a Philistine stronghold a few miles north of Jerusalem.

Geba stood on the south side of a deep valley or gorge, with the Philistines encamped at Michmash on the north side across from it. Philistine detachments were raiding and ravaging the surrounding country, and their overwhelming military strength left Israel's small, nearly unarmed company afraid. The crisis exposed Saul's perversity and was permitted to teach Israel humility and faith.
