1 Samuel 14:21
Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan. Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
After Saul's presumptuous sacrifice cost him the honor of defeating the Philistines, this turning of the Hebrews belongs to God's deliverance of Israel through Jonathan. God permitted the crisis to rebuke Saul's perversity and to teach His people humility and faith. He chose Jonathan, one who feared the Lord and acted by a divine impulse, as the instrument to deliver Israel. The deliverance began through Jonathan and his armor-bearer, whom angels protected and fought beside, bringing panic, trembling of the earth, and confusion in which the Philistines fought one another, a commotion Saul's watchmen saw before Saul himself knew deliverance was being accomplished.
The Hebrews are those who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them into the camp from the surrounding country. They had joined the Philistines out of fear. When they saw that God was fighting for Israel and the Philistines fled in confusion, they turned back to be with the Israelites under Saul and Jonathan to fight alongside them. Together with Israelites who had fled in terror and hidden in caves and thickets, they united with Saul and Jonathan and joined the pursuit of the Philistines. Their return was part of the deliverance the Lord wrought for Israel that day for His own name's glory, lest the heathen army triumph over His people and proudly exalt themselves against Him.
