Israelites Pour Out to Join the Pursuitby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 14:22

Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

The men in view are Israelites who had hidden themselves in fear in Mount Ephraim, in the very holes pointed to by the Philistine taunt about Hebrews coming out of hiding.
When they heard and saw that the Philistines were fleeing and that God was delivering Israel, those hidden men also followed hard after them in the battle against the routed enemy.
Their return added to the forces striking the defeated enemy and strengthened the battle.

The victory they joined had been begun by God through Jonathan and his armor-bearer, and not through Saul.
Jonathan was a man who feared the Lord and was chosen as the instrument to deliver Israel, moved by a divine impulse.
He was joined by his armor-bearer, a man of faith and prayer, and together they acted on the conviction that there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few, with earnest prayer and an agreed sign to know how to proceed.
God would not give Saul the honor of vanquishing the Philistines because of his sin in his presumptuous offering, but permitted the crisis to rebuke Saul's perversity and to teach humility and faith.

That day the Lord saved Israel.
The deliverance brought glory to God rather than to Israel's own strength or merit.
