1 Samuel 14:26
And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
The verse stands in the crisis when God rebuked Saul's perversity and taught Israel humility and faith by withholding from Saul the honor of defeating the Philistines because of his presumptuous offering. Instead He chose Jonathan to deliver Israel, for Jonathan feared the Lord and was moved by a divine impulse. With him stood his armor-bearer, a man of faith and prayer, and together they undertook a secret attack after earnest prayer. They set an agreed sign by which to determine whether God would prosper them, trusting that there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.
The honey dropping in the wood was God's provision to strengthen the weary army in that pursuit. Yet when the people came into the wood they would not put hand to mouth to eat it, for they feared Saul's oath. Saul's prohibition was a rash, humanly devised command that kept the people from God's provision. That withholding displeased God.
