1 Samuel 14:43
Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die. Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
This questioning stands within the account of Jonathan's attack on the Philistines. Saul had made a presumptuous offering, and because of it God withheld from him the honor of defeating the Philistines. In his place Jonathan, a man of faith, was chosen as the one to deliver Israel.
Jonathan had tasted only a little honey with the end of the rod in his hand, taking it because he was faint after a long day's labor. He did so without knowing of Saul's vow forbidding food. When confronted he openly admitted what he had done, while recognizing that Saul treated the act as deserving death. That rash vow had brought needless hardship upon the people and exposed them to further sin.
