1 Samuel 14:47
So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.
Together with the verse that follows it, this verse records Saul's wars against Moab, Ammon, Edom, the Amalekites, and the Philistines, and states that he gained victories wherever he turned. In the deliverance of Israel connected with Jonathan's attack on the Philistines, the victory was given through Jonathan rather than Saul, so that Saul would not receive the honor of defeating the Philistines because of his presumptuous offering. The campaign against the Amalekites was a specific command from God to be carried out in obedience rather than for Saul's glory or Israel's gain. Its conquest and its spoils were not theirs to claim, for they were the execution of God's judgment and a public showing to the nations of the doom of those who had defied Him.
