1 Samuel 14:52

And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

The verse stands at the beginning of Saul's reign after Israel asked for a king instead of looking alone to God as their King. It falls within the history running from Eli to the old age of David. It belongs to the account of Jonathan's remarkable victory.

It shows that Saul fought the Philistines throughout his life but never permanently subdued them, because he had failed to use the opportunity God had given him. It reflects Saul's foolish, growing rashness and weakness. That rashness and weakness led to the Lord's rejection of Saul and his family and to the anointing of David. It presents Saul of Gibeah as a valiant soldier in Israel who fought with carnal weapons, in contrast to Saul of Tarsus as a valiant soldier of Christ who fought with spiritual weapons.
