1 Samuel 17:20
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
David rose early in the morning in obedience to Jesse, left the sheep in the care of a keeper, and went to the camp of Israel, to Saul's camp. He went carrying a message and a gift for his brothers. He came to the trench just as the host was going forth to the fight, as the army was setting out for battle. On arriving he heard the commotion of the battle and saw the armies drawn up against one another. His coming at that moment put him in place to hear Goliath's challenge, and his visit served the higher purpose of saving Israel and defending Israel and its God.
He did not trust in Saul's armor or in his own prepared strength, but went forward trusting God to give victory to the truth. His humble reliance on God stands in contrast to those who boast in themselves and rely on their own arguments. This battle is recalled in connection with his later flight as the time when he slew the Philistine champion by trusting in God to overcome him.
