1 Samuel 17:27

And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.

The words are the people's answer to David, repeating what would be done for the man who killed Goliath. At that time Goliath was defying Israel day after day, while the Israelites were afraid and demoralized with no one willing to fight him. The reward so repeated was a great reward offered by Saul to anyone who would slay the Philistine champion. The specific details of that promised reward are left unstated.

David met the Philistine's defiance with indignation that the armies of the living God were being challenged. The account contrasts Goliath's boasting with David's humble trust in God. David did not rely on human strength or armor but went forward trusting God to give the victory. The verse belongs to the account of David's victory over Goliath the Philistine champion, which made David known as the champion's slayer and later put him in danger at Gath when his enemies recognized him as that man.
