David Carries a Rescued Lamb Beside a Dead Bearby MarioSedillo

1 Samuel 17:36

Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

David spoke these words while Goliath was repeatedly challenging Israel, defying the armies of the living God, at a time when Israel was afraid and no one would answer him. He had been directed by an angel to save his people. He was stirred to act by zeal to defend the honor of the living God.

While guarding his sheep God had delivered him from both the lion and the bear. On that ground he was confident God would also deliver him from Goliath. His trust rested in God's power, not in his own strength or weapons or preparation.

His example teaches God's servants to be humble and rely on God to give truth the victory, instead of becoming boastful. The words belong to the account of his victory over the Philistine champion, whom he later remembered as the man he had slain. That victory made him known to the Philistines, so that he was in danger when he later sought refuge among them.
