David Holds Goliath's Head Before the ArmyBible World

1 Samuel 17:53

And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.

The verse belongs to the account of Israel's deliverance from the Philistines through David. Its place in that account is to show that God saved Israel by David and not by Saul, rather than to center attention on the return from the pursuit and the plundering of the tents.

Victory in meeting defiers of Israel comes only by trusting in the God of Israel and not in human armor or boasting. Like humble David, servants of God must not trust in prepared arguments as David was urged to trust in Saul's armor, but must trust in God, make Him their strength, and humbly trust God to give the truth the victory. They must not take Goliath's part by defying and provoking discussion and then going forth confident and boastful and magnifying themselves instead of hiding behind Jesus. Going forth in self-confidence brings elation and loss of balance and unsuccessful discussion that injures their own souls and the souls of others.
