1 Samuel 17:57
And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
The moment belongs to David's visit to Israel's camp, when after the battle he was taken and brought back before Saul with the trophy of victory in his hand. He had been sent to the camp by his father, yet he had also been directed by an angel to save Israel. His zeal was stirred when he heard Goliath's defiance against God and against Israel.
He returned victorious because he refused Saul's armor and went out to meet Goliath in humble trust in the God of Israel. In the lesson of this return, Saul's armor represents prepared human arguments, which cannot give victory. Goliath represents boastful, confident defiance and the self-magnifying provocation of discussion. David represents humility that hides behind Jesus, that humbles the heart, and that relies wholly on God to give truth the victory.
Ministers who provoke discussion and trust in their own arguments act the part of Goliath and put their trust in Saul's armor. In doing so they become elated and lose their balance. Their discussions fail and injure their own souls and the souls of others.
