1 Samuel 18:29

And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

1 Samuel 18:29 stands within the extended account of 1 Samuel 18–22 dealing with David's relationship to Saul and to Jonathan. Its immediate setting is marked by Jonathan's deep affection for David and by the covenant made between the two of them. That setting of friendship and covenant does not by itself account for Saul's increased fear of David or for Saul becoming his continuing enemy.
