1 Samuel 19:2
But Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself: But Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:
Jonathan delighted greatly in David because his soul was knit with David's soul, loving him as his own soul in a sacred bond of union. That heart-knit love led Jonathan and David to enter a covenant to be united as brethren. Jonathan sealed the covenant by stripping himself of his robe and giving to David his own robe and his garments, even his sword and his bow and his girdle.
The friendship was the Lord's doing, that Jonathan might be the means of preserving David's life when Saul sought to kill him. Out of that union Jonathan warned David that Saul his father sought to kill him, urging him to take heed to himself until the morning and to abide and hide himself in a secret place. That friendship remained unbroken till the death of Saul and Jonathan. God's providence had connected David with Saul so that by wise behavior David would obtain the confidence of the people, while by a long course of hardships and vicissitudes he would be led to put his entire trust in God and be prepared to become ruler of His people.
