1 Samuel 19:3
And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.
This promise belongs to the time after the slaying of Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not permit him to return to his father's house. In those days David was entrusted with important responsibilities, and by his modesty he won the affection of the people and of the royal household. It was then that Jonathan's soul was knit with the soul of David, Jonathan loving David as his own soul. Out of that love Jonathan and David made a covenant to be united as brethren. In token of it Jonathan gave David his own robe and his garments, even his sword and his bow and his girdle.
