1 Samuel 19:8

And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.

This verse belongs to the time after David killed Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. At that time the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David in love as for his own soul, and Jonathan and David made a covenant to be united as brethren, with Jonathan giving David his robe and garments together with his sword, his bow, and his girdle. At that same time David was entrusted with important responsibilities, yet he remained modest and won the affection of the people as well as of the royal household.

The verse describes David going out to lead Israel in battle against the Philistines. In that battle he defeated them with a great slaughter so that they fled from him, winning a great victory. David's success and the people's praise of his wisdom and courage stirred Saul's renewed bitterness toward him.
