1 Samuel 20:19
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel. And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
After the slaying of Goliath, Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. At that time the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul, and they made a covenant to be united as brethren. In token of that covenant Jonathan gave David his robe and his garments, even to his sword and his bow and his girdle. David was entrusted with important responsibilities, in which he preserved modesty and won the affection of the people as well as of the royal household.
The day before the new moon feast David and Jonathan made the plan to test Saul, because David feared to appear at the king's table where both young men were expected. It was arranged that he would first visit his brothers in Bethlehem and on his return hide in a field not far from the banqueting hall by the stone Ezel, absenting himself from Saul for three days. Jonathan was to watch Saul's reaction and use the sacrifice at Bethlehem as the reason for David's absence, and at the appointed time David would learn from that spot whether it was safe to return or whether he must flee.
It belongs to the account of Jonathan helping David escape Saul's attempts to kill him. The friendship between Jonathan and David was a sacred bond established by God, by which Jonathan was to help preserve David's life.
