1 Samuel 20:35

And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

In the morning Jonathan kept the appointed time by going out into the field with a little lad to meet David and carry out their plan to learn Saul's intentions. At that meeting he was able to tell David that the king meant to kill him, and so to preserve David's life. After the warning the two friends parted in grief and in peace, bound by their oath before the Lord.

The meeting belongs to a most sacred bond of union in which Jonathan's heart was knit with David's, a union that remained unbroken until the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. This friendship was the Lord's doing, making Jonathan the means of saving David's life. God's providence connected David with Saul so that by wise behavior David would obtain the confidence of the people, and by a long course of hardships and vicissitudes would be led to put his entire trust in God while God was preparing him to become ruler of his people.
