1 Samuel 20:40

And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad marks the end of the prearranged signal by which Jonathan communicated to David what Saul intended. Before this, David hid three days in a field not far from the banqueting hall. During that time Jonathan tested Saul at the new moon feast with the excuse that David had gone to Bethlehem for his father's household sacrifice. Saul's rage at David's absence and his hurling of the spear at Jonathan proved he was determined to kill David. Jonathan then came at the appointed time to the spot in the field and sent his lad with the weapons back to the city to Gibeah so he could be alone with David.

The two wept bitterly together over the dark passion of the king shadowing their lives, renewed their oath that the Lord would be between them and between their seed forever, and parted to pursue different paths with the charge to go in peace. After this parting, Jonathan himself returned to Gibeah while David hastened to flee. Jonathan's heart was knit with David's in a most sacred bond of union that remained unbroken until the deaths of Saul and Jonathan. That friendship was the Lord's doing, so that Jonathan would be the means of preserving David's life when Saul tried to kill him.
