1 Samuel 22:23

Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.

The verse belongs to the period after the slaying of Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. At that time the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. They made a covenant to be united as brethren, and Jonathan gave David his robe and his garments, with his sword and his bow and his girdle. David was then entrusted with important responsibilities, and by modesty won the affection of the people and of the royal household.

The verse is David's welcome and promise of protection to Abiathar son of Ahimelech after Saul's slaughter of the Lord's priests. Abiathar escaped and fled to David and reported that Saul had slain the priests. David acknowledged that on the day Doeg the Edomite was present he knew Doeg would surely tell Saul. David took blame for having occasioned the death of all the persons of Abiathar's father's house. David told Abiathar to remain with him without fear, because the one seeking David's life was also seeking Abiathar's life, and with David he would be in safeguard.
