1 Samuel 22:3
And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.
The verse belongs to the history that opened after the slaying of Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. In that history the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David so that Jonathan loved him as his own soul, and Jonathan and David made a covenant to be united as brethren. As the token of that covenant Jonathan gave David his robe and his garments, with his sword and his bow and his girdle. In that same history David was entrusted with important responsibilities, yet he preserved his modesty and won the affection of the people and of the royal household.
