Doeg Whispers to King Saul Under the Tamarisk Treeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 22:6

When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)

Saul is shown abiding at Gibeah under a tree with his spear in his hand and all his servants standing about him. This belongs to the period after David killed Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. At that time Jonathan's soul was knit to David's and he loved him as his own soul, and they made a covenant to be united as brothers. Jonathan gave David his robe and garments with his sword and bow and girdle, while David was entrusted with important responsibilities and by modesty won the affection of the people as well as the royal household.

The immediate setting is after Saul's plan to ensnare and capture David in the cave of Adullam failed, when Saul learned that David had left that refuge and been discovered with his men. On learning this Saul was greatly enraged, and because David's flight was a mystery to him he concluded that only traitors in his own camp had told David of his nearness and design. Saul charged his counselors with conspiracy against him and tried with offers of rich gifts and positions of honor to bribe them to reveal who among his people had befriended David.

That accusation and appeal opened the way for Doeg the Edomite to inform on David's visit to Ahimelech. Then Saul, controlled by Satan and maddened with rage, decreed and carried out without any command from God the slaughter of Ahimelech and eighty-five priests wearing a linen ephod and the ruin of Nob. In this, Saul who in disobedience had spared what God had devoted to destruction among the Amalekites slew the priests of the Lord.
