Doeg Whispers to King Saul Under the Tamarisk Treeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 22:7

Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

The setting belongs to the time after the slaying of Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not permit him to return to his father's house. It was when the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Jonathan and David then made a covenant to be united as brethren, and Jonathan gave David his robe and his garments, even his sword and his bow and his girdle. At the same time David was entrusted with important responsibilities, and by modesty won the affection of the people and the royal household.

The words were spoken in rage after David had left the cave of Adullam and escaped a plan to ensnare and capture him. Saul could explain the flight in no other way than by believing that traitors in his own camp had told David of his nearness and design. On that ground he accused his counselors and attendants of conspiracy against him. His promise of fields and vineyards and places as captains of thousands and of hundreds was the offer of rich gifts and honors to bribe them to reveal who among his people had befriended David.
