Doeg Whispers to King Saul Under the Tamarisk Treeby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 22:9

Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

This verse belongs to the history that followed the slaying of Goliath, when Saul kept David with him and would not let him return to his father's house. In that same history Jonathan's soul was knit to David's soul so that he loved him as his own soul, and Jonathan and David made a covenant to be united as brethren, with Jonathan giving David his robe and his garments even to his sword and to his bow and to his girdle. In that period David was entrusted with important responsibilities, yet he preserved his modesty and won the affection of the people as well as of the royal household.

Its immediate setting came after Saul tried to ensnare David at the cave of Adullam and David escaped, when Saul was enraged and believed that traitors in his own camp had warned David. Saul then charged his counselors with conspiracy against him and offered rich gifts and positions of honor to find out who had befriended David. The verse is Doeg the Edomite's informing answer that he saw the son of Jesse coming to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob, given from ambition and greed and from hatred of the priest who had reproved his sins, and shaped in a slanted way to kindle Saul's anger against Ahimelech. That inflammatory report, a mischievous tongue set on fire of hell, stirred up the worst passions in Saul's heart, so that maddened with rage he decreed that the whole family of the priest should perish.
