The verse belongs to the history of David's flight from Saul, coming just after Abiathar escaped Saul's slaughter of the priests and found safety with David. In that setting it records the offer of the Ziphites to lead Saul to David's hiding place and to cooperate in putting David into the king's power. Having been warned of their plan, David withdrew to another refuge.
