1 Samuel 24:10
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’s anointed.
The verse presents a shepherd lad to whom God had promised the throne standing against Saul as the established monarch determined to hold fast his power. In the cave Saul was delivered into David's hand, and David had him in his power yet spared his life. He did so although others with him urged him and his followers pressured him to kill Saul. He did so even though Saul remained a danger to him.
He refused to put forth his hand to take Saul's life because Saul was the Lord's anointed and his appointment was sacred. He pointed to the piece he had cut from Saul's robe as proof that he was not seeking Saul's harm. He repented of cutting off that piece of the robe because he felt even that act dishonored Saul's sacred appointment.
Though in himself utterly helpless before overwhelming power, even the power of the whole world, David trusted God's word, held fast his faith, and withstood Saul. His course witnesses to the power of God's word to prevail against human power and policy used in support of evil. His course places him in the world's true nobility and royal line, which youth today are called to join and take their places in.
