1 Samuel 25:2

And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

The verse belongs to the time after Saul killed the priests of the Lord and Abiathar escaped and fled to David. At that time David was still hunted by the king and found no place of rest or security. The man described was Nabal, a very wealthy man of Maon whose possessions were in Carmel, owning three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. He was shearing his sheep in Carmel, and that sheep-shearing became the setting for David's request for food after David and his men had protected Nabal's flocks and shepherds.
