1 Samuel 25:26
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
The verse belongs to the time after Saul killed the priests of the Lord, when Abiathar son of Ahimelech escaped and fled to David, and David kept him with himself in safeguard while Saul was still hunting David's life. It occurs in Abigail's humble encounter with David, in which her piety showed naturally in her face, words, and actions. In that encounter Abigail decisively intervened to keep David from shedding blood and avenging himself with his own hand, crediting the Lord with withholding him from that course.
David recognized that her intervention, used by the Lord, had prevented him from doing a great evil, and he chose to refrain from vengeance. Abigail urged that his enemies and those seeking evil against him should fare like Nabal, leaving vengeance to God, for David should fight the Lord's battles and not seek revenge for personal wrongs.
The history shows that a woman who knows the way of the Lord may act promptly and independently in such a crisis, while as a wife she stands as her husband's equal, sharing life's responsibilities and giving him due respect.
